I need to clean some brass bolsters and guards on some old knives. I would like to find a product that cleans the brass without the risk of damaging the wooden or stag handles. Also, it would be nice if it left a protective film.
Please share your technique with me.

I use "Autosol". Most people would recommend Flitz. I prefer paste to spray or liquid cleaning. Easier to control and no messy spills. Just give it a good circular rubbing and you'll have some mirror brass!

Brasso works but has a high ammonia content = alkaline and therefore not the best on certain woods and will eventually leach stag and bone. Meguiars metal polish works very well on brass and has some protective properties as well. Mineral oil or Renaissance wax will protect brass and handles.

Put masking tape over scale material. I've found that fiberglass boat polish works good and leaves behind a wax coating.

wrights brass cleaner is excellent and not quite as much ammonia, whatever you use i would not pile it on, because it will be hard getting it off.

an old toothbrush and toothpick will do a world of good for the crevices. also old 100% cotton t-shirt or diaper will help.

if you can find the cans of brasso that has the liquid impregnated in cotton type ticking, it is excellent for repeat polishing, i have found it at the px on military bases at times, you may be able to find it at a military surplus stores.

i believe that walmart carries the wrights brass cleaner...our local grocery store carried it at one time.
