I fell in love with spyderco with the purchase of a persistence last year. I'm ready to upgrade and was torn between the Delica4 and Centofante3. then I got to thinking why not both. Now my thoughts are, 4 about same price I can get a PM 2. what are your thoughts? do I go for 2 knives with designs I love, or the pm 2 that everyone says is a must have?

As neverdie says, go with the one(s) you like, but I would also add:
- go with the price you can afford
- go with the one(s) that will serve your needs best

Comparing Them:
- The delica and centofante are a bit shorter on blade length than the PM2, I believe they're 2.875"/3.123"/3.44" respectively. Delica and Cento are a bit lighter as well
- deli/cento are both VG-10 vs the S30V of the standard PM2 in your price range, in case you have any steel preference
- Handles are FRN on Deli/Cento, G10 on PM2. IMHO, they're both great materials
- Deli and PM2 offer 4-way clip orientation, while cento only offers tip up/down on one side
- Deli/Cento have backlocks vs the compression lock of the PM2
- Deli/Cento have pinned construction vs PM2 torx screws

Hope this helps, and if I messed up any of the data, I'm sure someone will let me know. ;)
For what it is worth, once you buy one, it is usually only a matter of time before you end up buying the rest. ;)

I agree with the previous posters saying that you should buy what you like, otherwise you'll probably have some regrets. I own both the Delica and the PM2. The Delica is a great light-duty EDC knife; I carry it everyday. The PM2 is a more robust design, as evident by its larger frame and thicker blade. The PM2 also has the outstanding compression lock. You can't go wrong owning either one, and you certainly wouldn't have any trouble selling a PM2 if you decided you didn't like it. Good luck!

if you don't get the Para-2 now, you're only prolonging the inevitable :D

It's true. I didn't even LIKE Spyderco a year ago; now I need a loan to finance all the PM2 sprints I have on pre-order!!!! :D

Also, have you looked at the sage series. They are a little smaller, more towards the delica and you can get many different handle and lock configurations.

+1

The real problem here is that every single post you get is going to be great advice. :D

I love the Sage series as well - the Native 5 is probably another of my favorites, the list goes on... and on... and on...

The hunger is a beast that is never satisfied :)

That is true, but let him enjoy Delica and Cento first, if he likes them. He will get para2 later. There is a place for all of them. With all my respect and love to para2, cento and FFG Delica are better slicers.:)
The friend of mine, who had at one time well over 100 Spydies, said that he doesn't need any knife except cento3. And he did just that, sold all of them. cento still in his pocket.

Really it just depends on what your intended use is. You already have a large folder in the resilience, so the Delica or Centofante are nice smaller slicers. The Delica is also a classic EDC knife. However, if you don't like FRN handles the Sage series spydies give you a nice variety of handle material and lock styles as well as decent steel in the CPM-S30V. I own a Sage 3 and love it. However my Gayle Bradley and Paramilitary 2 see more pocket time :D

If you have been wanting a Delica and Centofante I say go for it.

Delica is one of my all time favourites - have about 7 different variations. Regular EDC. Centofante 3 is like a Suzuki Swift, heck of a good product but underrated and often overlooked. The blade is very sharp and thin, but the light weight is the big selling point. I have a PM as well, but it doesn't see much pocket time. Scary sharp knife though - i have unintentionally destroyed a few things with this knife :) If it was up to me, I would take the Delica/Centofante 3 combo and get the PM later, but it's not me, it's you.....

I was in the same boat several months ago. I started with the Persistence. I loved it. Cheap, G10, tough. Then I started looking at other Spyderco's.

Here was my thought process. I wanted a US made knife. I wanted a choil. I wanted G10 (I hate FRN). I wanted the same ballpark size as the Persistence.

The answer for me was the Native 5. I tried the PM2 and it was too big. I would consider it a large knife. I see the appeal though because all other aspects of the knife are top notch. It was just too big.

I tried the Dragonfly 2 G10 (twice). I love the look, and the VG10. Too small.

Like Goldielocks the Native was the perfect fit.

Here is a pic of the Cat (another awesome Spyderco), Persistence (polished blade), and Native 5 for size comparison.

Given the three knifes listed in the OP my choice would be the PM2. I couldn't get past the FRN. I would hate it every time I saw it.

I have more use for smaller knives, and the PM is a big knife. If you want a bigger pocket knife, the PM will be fine. I have a stretch for that role.
If you want a smaller knife for edc, the others may be better choices.
It is all a matter of taste and want.
...for most of us, we don't need more knives.

i use to carry my centofante3 everyday until i got my endura4 ZDP. i carried that endura for over a year straight, until i got my (first) para2. the centofante3 and endura (or smaller brother delica) are nice, very good knives, but they are not going to kick a para2 out of my pocket now.

here is my opinion: i rather have one para2 than a centofante3 and delica combined.

p.s. my biggest problem with the centofante3 is that it's riveted together, i can't tighten the knife back up. after a good amount of use i gave it over the years i have to send it back to spyderco.

If you don't have a Delica, that would be my first choice. Get the FFG VG-10 one in the FRN handle color of your choice. If you're lucky you might find one in green g-10. A Delica 3 was my first, and after ghetto-FFG ing, it finds its way into my pocket fairly often. That said, the ergos of the Deli, while good, will not be as nice as the PM2.

If you need a smaller slicer why not check out the Chapparal (sp?) or the Sage series (as mentioned before). Both are in the PM2 price range but are smaller, more pocket-friendly, and superb pocket scalpels.

If you prefer a little more style, then try the Lum Chinese. Also VG-10, but with either CF scales/steel liners or Alu handles with nested liner lock.

Thanks for the input everyone. I ended up ordering the delica ffg yesterday and will get the cento3 next week or so and maybe the chapperal later in the year.

The Delica defines EDC practicality. Some people don't like FRN. If you're one of those, then avoid. But you could own the Delica and Cento 3 for about the same price as a PM2. The Delica is light and not so dear that you'll fear to use it hard. OTOH, the PM2 is as close to perfect as it gets. You really cannot go wrong either way.

Wow, this really does sum up the Delica very well.

I say, start small, buy an FFG Delica in your choice of color, and carry it for a while. Figure out what you like, and don't like about the knife to help you decide your next purchase.

(Or skip the guesswork and get a PM2, they really are that great)
