I want to get one, but need some direction. Which combo pack do most people get? Can they do a custom pack? Meaning substitute items for others?

As far as leveling the stones, can yo udo this on a DMT plate? Or is it needed to get the disc he sells, and the sic powder?

What stones are you guys using for them? I want to build some of my own, with the 1x4 DMT's, and the 1x4 Spyderco stones. What about the Chosera's? I heard or read, that he sells them, and his are thicker. Any word on that?

Anybody using the Shaptons for them?

Sorry for all of the questions, just want to buy the right stuff once. Thanks in advance guys, Josh

It's a great machine. Sounds like you already know that you will get really into it so consider getting a Pro model to start with. The Pro model is worth the upgrade cost for the serious sharpener. It's more versatile than the Apex and you can add the scissor attachment if you choose.

I have made some stones myself, it's easy. I suggest using 6 inch stones, the 4 and 5 inchers will work but you have to be much more attentive to what you are doing when you use them.

I have been using a DMT XXC 3x8 plate for flattening my EP stones for a little over a year now, works great. I just got an Atoma 140 and it works even better. Again an upgrade I would go with for the price.

I have Shapton Glass, Shapton Pro, Nubatama, and Choesera after market stones for my machine. I enjoy the variety but if I just had to pick one line I'd go with the Shapton Glass. One of my very favorite single stones is the Nubatama Ume xxh 1000. I could entirely live without the Choesera stones.

I have not found any of the Edge Pro stropping solutions to be completely satisfactory the 1x6 balsa is the best though. I strop by hand on a 3" x 11" bench strop with balsa, horsebutt, or paper.

Hope that helps a little. ;) Welcome to the rabbit hole!

Thanks EBR, I appreciate the info. Have you used any of the DMT's to make stones with yet? I would think that they would rock.

Yes I have. Some folks like to use the 6" x 2" plates on the EP directly. This kind of works, but invariably the plate will fall out of the stone arm. I have gone ahead and mounted my plates on aluminum blanks just as I would a stone. They do work very well too. I cut the aluminum to 6.25 inches then bevel the ends so they will lock in to stone arm. Hopefully you can see it in the picture. ;)
