Hi everyone,

I want to get a smaller fixed blade to use on hikes or when I travel to use for kitchen prep.

Based on price and length, I have narrowed my choices down to Benchmade's Fixed Grip or 201+Activator and Fallkniven's F1.

Also, I am a lefty and only the Grip comes with an ambi sheath which plays into my dilemma.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

I am also a lefty. The F1 is a wonderful knife and will serve you well.If you're in the kitchen, you don't need to worry about the sheath. If you're out in the woods, wear the knife on the right and the pistol on the left.

f1 all the way...if you contact jre industries they can rig you up a custom sheath for about 40.00 beans... f1 imo is the best knife for the money in its' class.

BM Grip. With it's better in-hand grip than the F1, and it's superb 154CM steel, it can;t be beat for the price...or the price plus $40.

I dont have the other two, so I cant be objective on all three. My activator came with a leather sheath which works both handed (I'm a righty) and in the kitchen I agree that it doesent matter. May be more "people" friendly thatn the others if it matters. Nobody seems to mind mine.
I really want to try the f1 -everyone who has one always recommends it. I do love the bm tho. fwiw

Sincere thanks for the advice...

One more thing - am I in the right ball park comparing these three blades?

Check the For Sale Custom Fixed Blades forum. You might be surprised how inexpensive a quality custom knife is. Also, being custom, you could request a lefty sheath.

For you specified uses I'd say go with the Fixed Grip in 154CM. You'll save yourself a lot of money and Get a Perfect knife for Hiking/Camping and GREAT for kitchen work. AND up for the task of field work for a great price. My Buddy Carried on through his 2 tours in Iraq, and used it every day for any cutting chore you could Imagine a G.I. doing. and it came back looking great. It's a really manegable size and GREAT Grip and feel in the hand. Great Design. I think( I'M not a BM fanatic but I do like the Grips, so I might be wrong) But I think Ritter designed it to be a real "Survival" if you will, type knife. For Game, Kitchen work. Everything you could imagine in a field situation.
Fallkinvins are great, Don't get me wrong. but for your uses and to save a great deal of money(Enough to get a second blade if you wanted) I'd go for the Fixed Grip.

Oddly enough, I think the fixed Grip isn't as comfortable in the hand as the folding version is. I think the F1 is a fantastic knife, though it is a bit more that the Grip. I have no experience with the other one you mentioned.

How big are your hands? I'm told the F1 feels a bit small to people with larger hands. I have hands like a 17 year old girl and it fits me just fine.

You can never go wrong with anything made by Benchmade or Spyderco.

B4 you buy, take a look at Spyderco's fixed blades also.

OK: I got the...Fixed Griptilian, plain edge.

Thanks for all of the advice. I liked the fact that the Grip is made in the USA and that BM has a lifetime guarantee and sharpening service.

Just for fun, I am going to wear the sheath in the kitchen!

If you can find one, try a Benchmade Outbounder. I have two, one in 440C in one in D2, and really, really like them. I don't think they make them anymore, but they turn up on ebay occassionally.

buck 119, 6" blade but worth it

I was gifted a 119 some years ago and never used it much (mainly for bedside SD until I was of legal age for funner things like guns!). How does this guy hold up for bushcraft, batoning, etc? I have used it for kitchen prep, so far so good. Just looking for feedback.

Have you checked out Spyderco's line of FB's? With all due respect, they have lots of options, including H1-A RUST FREE, work hardening blade steel:thumbup::)
