I am new here, first post.. I am from columbia, missouri and I have a boker solingen 2002 440C tree brand classic knife and I can barely open the mail with it. My dad has stones and stuff and sharpens them to what he shows to cut the hair on his arm (never works for me) but yeah its still too damn dull. I have no desire to seek out the funds to buy a ton of things to sharpen my one knife. How do I find someone who will make this thing cut butter before it has melted? I went to the regional forum and searched for Missouri and didn't find anything so figured I would ask what I should do. Thanks guys.

Welcome to BFC ISX!!

There are a lot of great threads here on the forum about sharpening knives. It is well worth the time to read through them. There's a good sticky at the top of this sub forum "What is sharpening a knife about?" It gives good background information and what you are trying to accomplish when you sharpen your knife (if you hang out around here, it will soon be knives :D).

Get some inexpensive knives (think garage sale and dollar store kitchen knives) and try some different techniques you find here on the forum. See what works for you. Be patient and practice and practice and practice. Eventually you will figure out what works best for you.

If you want to get a stone, check out this give away by Legion 12: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1063638-Norton-Stone-giveaway-Added-Pics.

Thanks guys. I had read the threads but I don't want to try and think I can come close to the pros in an art like that. Basically I want this thing as sharp as a brand new $100 kitchen knife. Don't even know if its possible.

Do you want to sharpen it yourself or do you just need to get it sharp.

If you just want to get it sharp, I'm sure there are plenty of people here who'll be willing to sharpen it for you if you pay the shipping both ways (including me).

Brand new kitchen knives are usually only half sharp. Don't put yourself down, sharpening isn't that hard.
If you get a proffessional sharpen, ask the pro for instructions on maintaining the edge, which is less effort than a full sharpen. If it is your only knife, & you use it regularly, you will need to learn yourself. Practicing on a cheap knife is a good idea.

It is possible and done quite easily with a little know how and practice. I would be glad to sharpen it for you if you will PM me with your information. My charge is just return postage.

Blessings,

Omar

Alright I got busy. I did take it home and see what my dad could do with it. This is the result http://i41.tinypic.com/opv8d3.jpg

So if richard is healing then ohallum, can you fix this thing and make it straight and not a jagged butter knife?

I would be glad to sharpen it for you and get the edge straightened out. I will PM you with my address to send it to, and I will get it back to you ASAP. I tried to PM you but your not set up to receive PMs. You may need to re-set your preferences.

Blessings,

Omar

You know, once you get the knack of it, sharpening is pretty easy. I can put a pretty good working edge on a pocket knife using the bottom of a ceramic coffee cup as the stone and using a magazine cover as a strop. I've done it for several co workers in just a few minutes at my desk. And I am in NO way skilled at sharpening, I've just learned to hold the knife at a consistent angle, work up a burr on one side, switch to the other, work up a burr again, and then strop it off.

If I can do that at my desk with a couple of coffee mugs (I have a coarse grit and fine grit mug!) then you can learn it too. Just watch a few videos on YouTube. Our own Jackknife has a good video showing him doing just that, though he strops on his belt.

I do have a nice strop at home, made from an old leather belt and a $3.00 stick of green polishing compound I got at Lowe's. I've also got some more expensive sharpening stuff but for a general purpose cutting edge you don't need a lot of fancy stuff unless your edge is in really bade shape and needs some major reprofiling.

See the embedded videos of Carl sharpening on coffee mugs and stropping on his belt about midway down on this page: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1029230-New-to-Sharpening-Need-help!/page3
