Ok, so I've got my small blade (Mora Clipper), my main duty blade (BK7), and now I'm looking for a chopper. As I am almost completely ignorant concerning axes, hatchets and hawks, I am in desperate need of your help.

I'm looking for something that is small enough to carry in/on my pack, but hefty enough to do some legitimate work. If you could give some suggestions along with price point, that would be great. Thanks, everyone.

Try looking into Council Tools line of axes. For example there's:

Hunter's Axe
Boy's Axe
Hudson Bay Camp Axe
Hudson Bay Camping Axe Kit

That's a few that comes to mind. Now going up in price there's the Gransfors Bruks such as the Small Forest Axe. I have a same said axe as the GBSMFA with a different roll mark that I posted here: http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/s...Mears-GB-Small-Forest-Axe?highlight=Ray+Mears

Anyways, hope you find what you're looking for and enjoy!

In your pack vs. on your pack makes a big difference. If it has to go in your pack then you need a hatchet. And I'd recommend a hatchet over a 'hawk for doing 'legitimate work'.

But if on your pack works for you then I'd suggest a boy's axe (3/4 axe). Typically that means an axe of about 2-1/4 pounds with a 26" to 28" haft. I think this size is the minimum for doing serious axe work.
