I'm wanting to do burn rings on my modded trailhawk and I just picked up a mini butane torch. It spits a nice little flame and I'm just wondering if anyone knows how long to hold the flame over an area or should I just move it back and forth in a circle around the haft? I'd like to start in a little while so if anyone can help right now that would be great.

Hey Mike
I would go slowly back and forth till you get the desired darkness. Have fun, show us when you are finished, happy new year.

Best regards

Robin

Wax twine. Or soak some jute twin in an accelerant, wrap it around the handle and light the twine on fire. I think that is how some other guys have done it. I could be wrong, check the knifemakers section you might find a better answer.

Furniture wax will act as a resist to a degree 'till it gets too hot. I dip mine in oil and torch the whole thing..then scrape...

I wrapped mine with plane old masking tape in a spiral. Flame burns where the masking tape is not. Make sure you space it evenly because you will be able to tell if you don't. Love how mine turned out. Will be doing a nfrontier hawk soon. Good luck

Let's not forget the historical way of doing it:

Heat up an old file or other suitable piece of steel/iron and brand the haft with it.
