Hey all, new member here. Use to lurk a bit and got some great info that led to a few purchases. Anyway, my office managers son is graduating from Parris Island in about a month and is heading to the fleet. I'd like to get him something he can use. From my experience in the Corps, a multi or a nice knife came to mind. I need some suggestions for a really nice multipurpose. I was looking at the new SOG powerlock EOD, but have never had an SOG product. I use the heck out of my good old leatherman. Also, for a knife, I was looking at the KaBar Dozier Thorn. I know there are probably better folders out there, but KaBar means something to us Marines. I'd also like to find out if engraving the blade is an option. Nothing fancy, just letters. Oh, forgot to mention, he's going to be a comm monkey, so there will probably be a lot of cutting, splicing, crimping, etc.. So here's my inquiries:

1. Knife or Multi?

2: Best multi out there?

3. Opinions on the KaBar Dozier Thorn?

4. Engraving, and if so, who?

The SOG Power Lock EOD or all other SOG multi tool are excelent with there compond preassure gears. They alow you to realy grip down on what you have to squeez. You will be hard pressed to find something better then the SOG and I own and love Leather Man.

As for the KaBar I agree with you that there are better knives out there. If you want to get him one of those find out from KaBar if the do laser inscriptions on the blade. I know that Benchmade does, so does CRKT.

But my bet is a SOG Power Lock for sure. Based on what you have told us his duties would be.

A folder is always usefull.

Go ahead and get him a SOG PowerLock, or even the smaller & lighter SOG (Deluxe) Pocket PowerPlier. For a fixed-blade, the Camillus/Becker BK-7 Combat Utility would be a good choice.

FWIW, Get the lad either a SOG Powerlock or a
Leatherman Supertool for the work is sounds like he
will be doing. These two tools represent the best
in multi-tools available today. Whatever you do
DON"T get him a Victronx Swisstool as he will not
thank you for it after he tries to use it. :(

The Swisstool has many fans here but where that lad
is bound he can't afford a "pretty" tool. Also consider getting him a Camillus "Demo" knife (a
all stainless steel scout knife) to carry in his
pocket. This knife served me VERY well 30 yrs ago
when I was in S.E. Asia. Carried one for over 40
years. Very, very handy pocket tool.
