Whats up guys, this is my first post here and from what I can tell yall seem pretty helpful.
So I'm looking for a new fixed blade as the title suggests and need some help picking one, heres what I'm looking for.

4 to 5 1/2 inch blade, full tang, grind is up in the air Ive been thinking about either a scandi or full flat, steel preferably 1095 but open to suggestions, would like to have a fire spindle hole in the handle, I was thinking of either a drop or spear point, 3/16 inch thick would be ideal, and I would like to keep the weight relatively low because it is going to be used for backpacking. All for around $150

This knife is going to be used for camping, backpacking, and some bushcraft/survival tasks.
So far I've been looking at: ESEE 4,ESEE Laser Strike,TOPS BOB, and Habilis Trade knife (I already have a mora #1)
So if you guys have any suggestions or could suggest one of the knives listed that would be sweet

Thanks and God speed

Benchmade 162. Its S30V, has a fire starter hole in the sheath, 4.43" long, very thick blade. I love mine.

Kabar Becker BK-16 (drop point) or 17, or the larger BK-10 (0.188" bar steel and same as BK-7 and BK-9). Hard to beat a KaBar Becker for value. dependability, and functionality.

I have an ESEE 4. It's a good knife. No complaints, but I like the BK-16 better for an general purpose woods knife.

The Mora Companion is a good knife to have around the camp for slicing and dicing (cooking). They come in either a carbon steel or stainless. I have the carbon. Not fancy. But functional. But I like the BK-16 better just to carry around as it is a bit heavier and feels better to me.

Hows the coating on the BK-16? I've heard mixed things about it... thanks for the suggestions so far guys.... has anyone owned/own the habilis or know about it? not too many reviews out there

its just about hitten you buget's roof off
but what about the swamp rat RMD
it has quite possibly the best ergos of a knife i have ever felt
the steel has better edge retention and toughness then 1095(rowen's) but is a bit harder to sharpen but the difference is marginal
the sheath does not come with it but you can get a awesome kydex or leather sheaths from any one of the sheath makers around these forums (i would recommend Godspeedtatical, and glockcrazz and i have heard exallent things about 710's sheaths too
if the price is a major concern then you could spread out the payments by contacting the swamps customer service
bark river also makes a excellent knife
as does esee and becker so you really cant go wrong with it
cheers,
Thomas

Thanks snakeman!!! I completely overlooked swam rat... they have some great looking knives definitely gunna check them out now

All of the painted or coated finish blades wear off eventually (at least ones that I have seen or used). I don't worry about the coating and marking it up. The knife begins to show some character. :)

Another one that I like in this size range is the Blackjack 125. It has a full tang and made in A2 by Bark River. Big handle if you have large hands. Cost is very close to your $150 limit.

That sheath is a work of art:)

PS(and more on topic): I can vouch for the quality of Esee. I would also look into Bark River Knives, they look great.

+1 on the BK16

I can't speak to the coating because mine came stripped, but the new stuff on the FFG versions is supposed to be pretty rough, and pretty tough. It'll wear through eventually, but I wouldn't worry about it.
For $150 you can outfit it with the aftermarket sheath and scales of your choice.

BK16 or 17 and you can still afford to upgrade to a kydex sheath if you want. The new coating is fairly tough but I can tell you from experience that Ka-Bar's 1095cv isn't terribly prone to rust even when naked. Most guys strip the coating off and I haven't heard of anyone having to sand off rust. Ka-Bar also has the Navy MK1 is nice. It's not a full exposed tang but it is full length and they can take a decent beating. If you want to go fullsize the BK10 is great.
