I am looking for a knife as a gift for a close friends 25th anaversery. He is a big outdoors man and is going on a summer long expedition. He will be hunting in Oregon and fishing there, then going over to Idaho for fishing. I want a all around good knife that will not be too big but will still work for hunting, fishing, camp, and medium wood work.
Requirements

-Fixed Blade no bigger than 5 inches long, 4 is ideal, but nothing too thin
I want this to be a stout knife
-Rust resistant
-Non-leather sheath, something secure and easy
-Sure grip handle, prefer something other than wood
-Good steel, not 440
-Price range around $100, its a little flexable.
-and of course it has to look good.

Thanks

I have been looking at the Bark River Knives, but they are a little more than I wanted to pay, they come with leather cases. I like the Bravo 1 but again, little too much for a give away, might have to get it for myself though.

Im looking at the Onterio TAK and RAT 3. I like the kydex sheath on the RAT 3, but I think 3inches might be a little small. I wish the TAK had a Kydex sheath, that would be ideal.

Ranger RD4 - Great, stout knife, 4 inch knife. It is made with carbon steel so if he can put in a little maintenance it will definately pay off. I have an RD4 and use it for very similar purposes, so I'd highly recomend it.

Oh, also you can get a great custom kydex sheath, which will put you a bit over your budget but, it is a good deal and will provide a great sheath.

You sure that they aren't what you're looking for?

They are great knives, but the sheath is killing the deal. I dont want leather.

Well something I forgot to mention, Im giving this to him in two weeks. So I dont think I have time to have a custom sheath made.

What do you think of the RAT 3? I know the blade is coated but seems like a good knife?

The RAT 3 is one of my all-time favorite fixed blade knives...on the rare instances that I get to carry a fixed blade. The sheath is a little problematic though. Sorry if that did not help.

Sorry to butt in, but what kind of "anniversary" is this? Not a wedding type, I hope?

Aside from that, +1 for the RAT 3.

Get him a Bark River. The sheath will hold up for his trip. A kydex rig could be made afterwards.

OR

You can also contact Sharpshooter (Reid). He makes all of Bark River's kydex sheaths. Pick your knife and he could probably make one without you having to send in the knife.

Thanks for all the help. Im getting the RAT 3. And myself a bravo-1 very soon.

After reading your requirements, the name Bob Dozier popped into my head. His K-4 model might be the best, based on your description.

I have that model. No complaints. The blade steel is D2. Not the most rust-resistant. In America, it's classified as a very rust-resistant carbon steel. In other countries, it's classified as a stainless.

Another few thoughts for you. If your friend is indeed going to need this knife while fishing, I don't think a RAT 3, though a nice knife, will be the best for cleaning fish.
You might want to consider a narrower blade like the Fallkniven F2 Fisherman's Knife http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=6105
or
at least their F1 http://www.knifeworks.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1064

These are well respected knives, with good Steel (VG-10), Non-wood,non-slip handles, Non-leather sheaths, and around $100.
OR
You could get him the RAT3 or whatever, and throw in a FROST fishing knife for very little more:

+1 on Fallknivens. May be better off getting an F1 for more all-around use. Can get it with a kydex sheath now, I think.
