Need some help identifying types of traditional knives.

I have no idea what I am talking about here, but was wondering what "types" of knife designs such as Trapper, Toothpick, Barlow or other, and what brands Case, Schrade, or other would most likely have the following:
1] Single blade in large sizes up to 4 inches long
2] Handles/scales in white bone, stag, and pearl

I have not really looked for a traditional blade in a long time so advice is most appreciated. I think I saw a Case with a thumbstud but not sure if any of the traditional folders would open fast or not.

Thanks.

Sounds like you want a toothpick pattern. Back pocket and some sodbusters patterns can get that big as well.

Folding Hunter patterns might fit that description too, in terms of blade length around ~4". Big, heavy knives, usually carried in a sheath. Mostly two-blade patterns, but single blade versions are also out there. Examples:

Case 6265 (2 blades)
Case 6165 (1 blade; older versions only; no current production)
Case 6165L (1 blade, lockback; also older version)
Schrade 25OT (2 blades; Delrin handles)
Schrade 125OT (1 blade, Delrin handles, liner lock)

Queen also has 1 and 2-blade FH models, both non-locking. Gorgeous in the Amber Carved Stag Bone.

Another possibility is Canal Street. They've released recent single-blade FH models with liner locks. Various handle materials.

I know the blade is shorter than 4"...but what about a GEC #23 pattern with liner lock and stag scales?

Would you say these are about as heavy as a Buck 110 or even a little heavier?

None of those knives are as heavy as a Buck 110. In fact very few folders are except maybe the Schrade LB7.

good to know. Thanks. I like the 110 but when carrying in pocket kind of makes my pants sag a little.

As I'm typing this, I have a Case 6265 (older, 1965 or so) and a Schrade-Walden 25OT (also older) and a stag & nickel Buck 110 laying here in front of me. I'd say it's basically a wash, in terms of weight. Either or any of them might be heavier than the 110. Keep in mind, aside from the 110, all the others are 2-blade versions. Single blade FH models, presumably, would be a bit lighter. How much, is hard to say. If the 110 is more weight than you're willing to carry, I don't think the others would be much of an improvement. They're all big, heavy knives.

The Buck 110, by the way, is about 3/8" shorter in closed length, and roughly 3/4" shorter in overall length, when opened.

Here's a pretty nice picture thread of many of the style:
