Need some help in selecting a finish for my sheath.

I do not like the finish I put on my sheath initially. It is a bit sticky and made the leather VERY hard.

I used many coats of Ox Blood stain to get the look I wanted - but the stain, when it gets wet, bleeds on to the knife.

What can I use that does not stiffen the leather too much that will seal the stain into the sheath?

Will neatsfoot oil work? I am seeing why I might not want to use this heavy of a stain in the future.

Okay - I think I figured this out. I removed the finish and then used a VERY VERY small amount of the finish. They said to use it sparingly and holy crap - they meant REALLY sparingly. A drop goes a long way. I refinished the inside and outside and am VERY happy with the result.

I use Fiebling's on all my stuff. Goes on even and rubs out really nice.

Tandy Eco-flow on the inside and some neatsfoot mixed with neutral shoe polish on the outside. I think I will get some fieblings and some supersheen.

Super Shene won't make it rock hard but it will be stiffer than if you just put a wax-based protectant on it.

Are there particular finishes y'all like? Fiebings is a brand, and they have different finishes. Resolene, Atom Balm, etc. Same with Eco Flow - Satin Sheen, Super Sheen, etc.

For example, I use their Leather Sheen in a rattle can on my holsters. I've used thier Atom Balm on couple of sheaths, but I've generally been sticking with the Leather Sheen or some neatsfoot oil.

I prefer finishes that let the leather breath, like an oil and wax finish. Skeptical of Atom Balm because Fieblings doesn't publish ingredients. Can anyone who uses it tell me if it's more of a sealer like eurethane or more of a dressing like oil + wax?
