My eleven year old son loves knives. He has been wanting a fixed blade. So here is what i want to do i would love to buy a kit and make him a knife maybe a bowie but not sure. Any help on kits, type of steel, handle material, ect ect. I have a big whitetail set of horns that i might make the handles with. After all who would not like handles from a deer his dad killed. I do not know how to forge a blade but in time i will learn thanks in advace for all the help. philman1977

Have you checked out some kit and knife blade retailers?

They include knifekits.com, kovalknives.com and knifeandgun.com.
I've ordered blades, handle materials and more from all of them and they are all top notch companies from my experience.

I would suggest staying away from companies who sell blades that they say are hardened to Rc48-54. Some even give a range that wide.
Most are too soft and won't take an edge. (I speak from prior experience.)

But, any knife blade from the companies I mentioned above should be good.
(You'll see that some offer AUS-8A blades - very good. And, some offer 440C - also good. Others have "6A" - decent steel. All of those are stainless. So, you may want to decide if you'd like a stain resistant blade or if you want to go with a carbon steel or non-stainless steel - less chromium so they rust easier.)

Hope that helps a little...

Mike
