A friend of mine is looking for a good fighting knife and a good outdoor/survival knife. Budget is under a 100 dollars each, blade length is 5-7 inches. For the combat knife he wants something thats sharpened on the top but only towards the tip (imagine a bowie but the clip point area is sharpened) he's leaning towards a Ka Bar so any opinions on that would be appreciated. As for the survival knife i suggested swamp rat but i don't really know whats good. Is becker or ontario any good? Thanks

Your suggestion of Swamp Rat is right on. All of the standard line except the Howling Rat have the penetrator tip but are not sharpened any further back. I broke a Ka-Bar cutting cardboard, but it was either a Ontario or Camillus. Bought a Ka-Bar Ka-Bar to replace it, but it has only seen limited use after I got a Swamp Rat. Have him get a Camp Tramp first (7" blade) and he may not feel the need for the second knife. My perfect combo is the Howling Rat and either the Camp Tramp or the Battle Rat.

A cheap alternative would be to get a Becker BK7 or BK9 and have him sharpen the swedge. Both can be had for under $60 each.
