I'm sure it has been asked a lot but i cant really find what i'm looking for;
I've been using the sharpmaker and edge pro apex for a few years now and now trying to get into freehanding. I got a naniwa super 1k and after a few days of practice on a carbon mora knife i seem to get better at it. It shaves my arm hair pretty easy and the stone leaves a hazy mirror finish.
What would be a good follow up? I'm thinking of a naniwa super 5k. So far i only sharpen woods and pocket knives so 10k+ maybe a bit over the top, if the edge compares to what i get from the edge pro 3k tapes i'm very happy. The only "fancy" steel i have i S30v, the rest is 440c, 1095 and O1.

Thanks

Look for something a bit coarser like a 2k-3k, the jump to the 5k on a larger bevel or higher wear resistant steel would be difficult to impossible.

I did look at the 2000/5000 combo but thought the 2k might be a bit redundant. Any other suggestion is welcome too. Maybe a coticule?

Putting a natural stone in the mix will only complicate things, stick to the synthetic stones for now. Naniwa makes a 3k that would fit your progression well.

Ok, thanks so far. Will 3k be enoug to get a nice edge like the edge pro delivers in terms of sharpness or wil ik need to step up a bit?

Here in the Netherlands a coticule costs between the €40(100x40cm) and the €135(200x60). Not sure what it costs across the pond.

Yes, but it will not be a instant thing, you will need to become familiar with the new stone and learn to use it before it will produce the results possible.
