Hello all....

I need a little help please. My husband is coming home from overseas on the 19th of this month. I am looking to get him a great knife for Christmas. That being said...he is a knife nut. And I even have my own nice stash but mostly benchmades, leathermans and spydercos. He has one beautiful handmade knife from a SF guy in South Africa (it's a pretty knife not a utility knife). My husband is a Ranger and while we can appreciate the beauty of a knife, I would like to purchase one that is made to be used. Here are the requirements ....not more than 400 (we are on an Army budget), I prefer folding (only because it is easier to travel with though that is not a must so please feel free to throw in fixed), probably not custom because I only have a month until Christmas. I prefer locking but I'm sure he doesn't care, he loves anything with a blade. I also am thinking serrated due to his work but that is not definite. I suppose the best definition for what I am looking for is a great combat knife. I know he has a ton, but I want this one to be special. Please let me know which crafters you like the best.

I believe that is about it. I thank anyone in advance for their recommendations. I just need to be pointed in the right direction. And maybe, handmade is wishful thinking with our budget so please any help will do.

Thank you so much,
Jules

(edited...Well I feel like DA, after looking at some of the Master smiths here. If anyone has any ideas on a good knife for under 400 that would be great)

This thread makes me think of Ray Laconico. I believe he's still selling nice solid locking folders over in the folders for sale forum. You might want to go have a look there.

Thank you all so much for you help!!! I have decided I am woefully ignorant on some of this. And here I thought I was relatively knowledgeable. This has been humbling. I am very grateful for the suggestions. I am thankful for any help. I truly have to say, I am overwhelmed by the skill and knowledge here. I am also glad to know there are other "knife guys" who love blades like he does. It always amuses me because he is always bringing home something new. Last time he brought home a handmade blade from the Middle East. It is on display next to our wedding picture. Ha.

Julesmtn, contact Joh Horrigan at 512 756 7545 or 512 636 6562. He is a Master Smith and I believe a former Ranger. Lost his twin brother in the sand box a couple of years ago, also a Ranger. John has a line of nice budget priced combat/duty knives and he loves helping the GIs.
Happy Thanksgiving. Tell him I said to treat you right ( but he would any way)

julesmtn .. you might try surfing the Hosted Knife Makers sub forum. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/forumdisplay.php/807-Hosted-Knifemaker-s-Forums

Personally .. I buy production folders - nothing custom. Otherwise, if I spend mucho for one or someone gives me a really nice one, then it sits in the case/cabinet and doesnt get used - why? Cause I'm worried I'll tear it up, scratch it, etc .. and it wont be all purdy and nice.

Fixed blades .. makers I'm really diggin right now: KFU, Fiddleback, Backwoods, Rustick <-- find him on facebook (retired spec-ops), or Shaerks (facebook).

Good luck in your search.

I agree with Paul, John came to mind immediately after reading your opening post. If he doesn't know what type knife a Ranger would like no one does.

I just want to say thank you for going above and beyond to help a girl out. I cannot wait for this Christmas!!! So excited. I also got him a signed lithograph print of one of the battles he was in. So I think he is going to be "shocked and awed"! Lol. I promise to post pictures before wrapping or maybe I will post once he opens them. Thank you all again!

Julie,

Thanks to your husband for his service. I hope he and his fellow servicemen have a safe and happy holiday.

As most here know, we have been custom knife collectors for 33 years and have fixed and folding knives. A few months ago, my Son, Dean, showed me a knife that some of the Toronto Firefighters have obtained and after being duly impressed I had him obtain one for me. It is also available from Amazon

It is quite amazing for the price. Only in China eh? If I had not seen it I would not have believed it. I said at the time he asked me and mentioned the cost ($35) I was extremely sceptical but changed my mind.

BTW -- this is by no means a small knife and it is very substantial with nice features. Mine is on the visor of our vehicle.

Thus just a thought. Maybe one of these folders and whatever nice custom knife you decide upon would be nice. One with a lot of functionality and one for the sheer pleasure of having a nice custom.

Have happy reunion and holiday.
