Can anyone tell me what this is?

I was at the Gator Knife Show in Lakeland, FL yesterday and came across this and a few other Bucks.
This is one I haven't seen before.
It was in a box full of knives that I was looking through.
It is a large knife…4 1/2" closed with a 3 1/2" blade and weighs 6 ounces.
The bolsters and pin are not finished. The covers look to be a smooth Delrin.
The story the seller gave me was that it was a rough prototype of a knife that never went into production.
I had no reason to doubt him, but thought someone here might know.

Okay, I found one on bay and it was called a "large Bullet Trapper".

They must be fairly rare or I just haven't noticed them before.

I still would like anyone who might know why a Buck Knife was in this condition. It was never sharpened…not by someone else or at the factory.
I could clean it up and add some bone or antler, finish the bolsters, sharpen it and have a nice knife….but I don't want to do that if it is some kind of prototype. :)

Well, Stumps, I would keep it as it is.
This knife is a good item for any collection.

Stumps, could it be a Buck that was being made by Camillus. A lot of unfinished knives and parts went in the closing sale.

Stumps,

Why not post this on the Camillus forum? Someone there might know about it.

Bert

Stumps, I'm certain 300 Bucks has that knife and has done a write up on it. You may can find it searching the topics. It may have not been a topic he started. He'll soon check in and give you some information on it. Yes it is a large Trapper pattern made by Camillus. This not being my forte' I cannot offer much info.. DM

Your knife is the model 334 Millinium Trapper for the year 2000 (the new millinium). I think it was the last contract knife ever made by Camillus for Buck and was another Smoky Mountain exclusive. Like other Camillus contract knives it did not have a date code. It came in two different handles, jigged bone and black smooth. Correctly they will have a LE emblem and a serial number on the bolster. As it was already said, a lot of parts for these entered the market at auction after Camillus shut the doors and are being assembled and sold. These secondary knives are generally missing features like shields, serial numbers etc. Also I believe the pin materials differ from the original. The jigged bone came in a jewel case and the black one came in the standard green/brown box of that period with the mountain logo. The knife was a common standard Camillus pattern and is frequently seen in other (non Buck) forms such as the bullet knife or a wildlife series etc. I would say the knife is not a prototype as the pattern was already a longstanding common Camillus knife differing only in the shield and blade markings as made for Buck.

I'm learning! You have all been helpful. It was an oddity that I was not familiar with. Would love to know it's history and how it got to look the way it does.
I wonder why the pair of blades were painted and completely unsharpened. Maybe it was pieced together after the fact.
I also wondered about the large recessed pin about an inch from the shield space. I see now that it was for a small round medallion.

I did post a link to here on the Camillus Forum.

David…those were some nice looking knives in that link. Thanks!!

You never know what you will see on this forum. IT is described above and my opinion is it is a leftover from Camillus factory sell off. Hence the unground pivot pin. The hole in the scale where the special shield goes is interesting. The blades are painted red, why ???? I guess because someone wanted red blades. As suggested you can take to the Camillus forum and Phil Gibbs or one of the other old Camillus people might give us some unknown, by me at least, reason blades were red. Another junk box find.

EDIT: Some photos, let me stick my foot in my mouth, but these were the last, or thereabouts, of the special order Bucks made by Camillus for SMKWs sale only. NO model number printed on tangs. As was all the SMKWs special orders.

Bottom one is a left over knife, I think actually made at the end of Camillus but not a 'official" model. Notice the brass spring rivet.

The 'production' run for Buck was serial numbered. Notice 0648 and 0649

Last photo, all these photos are back in the forum history somewhere.

Nope its all yours, hope it is one of kind factory experiment. Someone's garage factory likely in truth, but you never know. 300

What good fun Stumper. Thank you for sharing. I've dug thru many boxes of mystery knives and usually only found that I needed to wash my hands afterward. No treasures. None. You have a good eye. Half a beer for you. Miller time.
