Hey guys, I want to make a push knife but I don't want to make it out of a solid piece of steel, ie. where the tang and blade is cut from one sheet of steel. Last push knife I made like that was about 7 years ago and got spit back in my face by the contact wheel. Don't even want to take that chance again!
My question-can I make the knife with a stick tang?
I'm going to use ivory for hanle and was thinking about making the tang about 3/8-3/4" wide and pinning it into the handle. My only problem with this is then there would be unsupported ivory on each side.
Second idea-weld some tits or tabs onto the tang after the blade is completely finished so the ivory would be fully supported. My little wire feed welder can weld stainless so that's so problem

Gonna make the sheath out of ivory too and make a titanium loop for the end of it and get a gold rope chain for it. Gonna be a classy neck knife.
Maybe I can find someone to scrim the handle and sheath.
That sure would be grand!

Thanks up front!!!!
Michael

Make the end of the tang into a large dovetail, or any shape for that matter, that will fit into the material under the ivory and pin it. Kinda like a framed handled push knife.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh says meeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!
So simple my big dumb self didn't see the proverbial snake that coulda bit me.
Thanks Mark!!!!

Your welcome,,

I might make a pusher myself sometime. Havent done one of those.

You ever use that dinosaur bone yet? :0

Sweany, than you big time!!!!!!!!!!!
I never would have thought to use google for this.
The stick tang with a knurl nut or something similar is what was in my mind, I just couldn't figure out how to say it, lol.
I guess ivory is tougher than I think it is.

Mark, the stone bone is still sittin in my shop but it's not forgotten!
I need to find someone who can drill the stuff for me or find out what kind of drill bits you use on it. Regular masonary bit don't touch it.
I still want to do the bowie with the carved t-rex crawling out of the blade with the round piece. The flat chunk would be great for set of scales on a hunter.
It's like me, just bidin it's time, waitin to strike. :)
The itch is gettin strong in me again.
Oh yeah, I'm pitchin all the jigs and crap too!!!!
Free hand all the way!
