So i just got my first real smartphone. A Iphone 4s, got it on a really good deal and couldn't resist. I have had cheaper smartphones before but this is my first nice one. Now my question is are those ultra protection bulky cases really necessary? Like otterbox defender and the ballistic hc case and survivors? I need a case for me and my wife, i talked her into it while we are at the store. Our phones get dropped sometimes id say 4-6 foot drops at the most. Sometimes my phone gets a little wet, not like soaked or submerged but i touch it with wet fingers sometimes but usually wipe it off right away. I actually just had to get a phone call while i was in the shower so i had to jump out and answer it with a kind of wet hand and a wet ear but thats the worst it gets. I honestly just want to feel like my device wont get ruined. I really dont want to spend a ton on them and i dont want to feel like i have a cinder block in my pocket. Any suggestions guys?

I just noticed this other fellow on here somenewguy who made a similar post but most of you guys recommended really rugged things or expensive things and i was looking at taking a different approach. Protection without a ton of bulk?

I have a iPhone 4S and use an otterbox defender during the week because I carry it at work (pipe fitter), I have dropped it 10 feet while in the case to the concrete with no damage, I carry it on the belt clip holster. On weekends I take it out of the case and carry it naked, in my pants pocket.

I was browsing through the cases at sprint, just window shopping you know? And I was looking at the otterbox commuter and it seems to be like a thinner smaller version of the defender. Found them for 20 online so that's not bad. Are they any good for protection?

Tell you the same thing I tell our youngest daughter and grand kids- CHANGE your habits. They hold world's records for losing, getting wet and dropping phones, iPods and even a Mac book and always surprised at costs for same.

I carry my iPhone like I carry my auto knives and concealed firearms - carefully and with respect. Did drop a closed auto knife in our home ONCE - that Kershaw Breakout 7000 picked up a little character.

Good luck with your quest however ANYTHING can be broken - if not you're not trying hard enough.

Best,

A four to six foot drop on a tile or concrete floor WILL shatter the glass screen on an uncased iPhone. I broke two of them that way before buying a good case with rubber "armor". Since then I have not broken one again (knock on wood).

I have had great success with the Otterbox Commuter...bullet proof w/o a bunch of unnecessary bulk.

iPhone guy for several yeas now, I too have dealt with this problem. I loved the defender on the 3GS however it felt very weak on the iPhone 4. I also hated the bulk so I went with a very this phone cover and military grade anti glare screen protector, (both found at BestBuy for about $35-40 total). After a year the screen protector started to peel and the phone cover had some cracks in it. I also missed the water proof ability that the defender had. So now I am using the LifeProof case. Supposedly 100% water proof and the shock proof ability is very high as well. The case is amazing, very thin and solid feeling. Only cons so far, headphone adapter (included) is almost alway required for using headphones. Also and this may just be me, the screen is not good in daylight, that damn anti glare spoiled me!

The Otterbox Defender not only is a protective case but it also has a clear plastic screen cover. I like the otterbox commuter cases too.... Make sure you back your phone up to your computer, can't stress this enough. Things happen, case or no case... Check out Amazon, they have a huge selection of protective cases and or screen protectors for iphone (usually at very good prices)

I had my iPhone 4s in a Rokform for my full 2 year contract. Many drops, never broken. Still looked new when I got the 5. I now carry the 5 in a Rokform. I got the same case for my wife and she drops hers on the garage floor all the time and it is still ticking. Very minimal case, decent protection. Otherwise I would also recommend otterbox. Great customer service also!

I ended up getting a speck candy shell grip. Loved the feeling of it and no added bulk. I feel like its safe for every day drops.
