I did a search but came up empty. Maybe I just didn't use the correct terms because I think I remember seeing this buckle or something similar here.

Any info will be appreciated.

Thanks jb, am I right to assume that it's the buckle mentioned by Vern Taylor in the very first BCCI newsletter? If it is, is the number on the back the members number or only the serial number of the buckle?

I'm having a couple of new belts made so that I have a choice of different designs and colors to wear this one on.

Actually, since it's never been worn and is in the original box, I wonder if I should wear it or just display it.

Hi Dave,

I had not noticed the numbers on the back of the buckle. I pulled mine off the bay a few years ago and assume these are the first silver buckles issued by the BCCI. But, now i'm not sure, there is not one thing on these that state or ID the BCCI and your is number 00019 mine is 05632, so it looks like there maybe have been a bunch of these made??????

Wow, if there were thousands of them made, I'm surprised that they aren't common as dirt.

I can't find a description of the first BCCI buckle that was given (or sold?) to the "founders" in the newsletters.

Pdave, did you just get that one off the bay...:D:thumbup:

I did.

WOW! Stunning buckle. I missed it or I would have bid against you as it is irresistibly attractive.

If you decide to wear it, wear it proudly. It is a hand-in-a-glove to have your Buck knife on a belt held together with a Buck silver buckle. Brilliant matching up.

BCCI will offer a silver buckle later this year and I hope to get one then.

You are lucky, lucky and lucky.

Wow that's a high quality buckle Dave! I bet it would look great on a buck skin colored belt.:)

Thanks Steve. 300Bucks said he watched it when it was listed before (guess I didn't see it then) but the BIN was $99. They relisted at $79 (+$5 shipping) and I think I saw it almost immediatly and bought it. I think that's a good price for a sterling buckle, especially for a Buck guy.

I just put in an order with my leather guy for one in natural leather with no fancy tooling, just a scrolled border. I know it'll come out nice and should look great with this buckle. He made me a great brown basket weave belt to match the holster for my new Kimber 1911 and it's the nicest belt I ever owned.

I hope that you consider posting a photo of the silver buckle on the new belt. I really do.

I have a silver buckle of the Oregon State Seal in the lock box, never worn. bot decades ago for a small fortune. It can't hold a candle to your beautiful gleaming beaming buckle of fame.

As per edbeau's good research link,

Wouldn't it be neat to know who or whom had owned the buckle and how they were associated with Buck Knives. Plumb, if I ever get one in "hand", maybe you and I should get Leesa Martin to etch our names on the back and a date to start a history record. 300

I'll do that when I get the belt, but that's probably about 2 or 3 weeks away. The guy that does my leather work is always busy but never rushes a project. Plus, I'm leaving tomorrow and will be gone for at least a week so I won't be here when the buckle arrives.

Thanks ed

Now that's an idea.

Thanks for the link edbeau,

This is great info and it is different than what Vern said in the 5/1990 BCCI news letter. Vern said the buckles were made by "Gist Engravers of Benicia, CA"????? I like what Vern wrote in your link better;) Now, if only 200 were made why is mine numbered the way it is?

Good question jb.

Things get more confusing for me as more info surfaces. I only see one bit that mentions the bronze overlay. It mentions the "logo and lettering" but doesn't describe them.

Here's everything I've seen so far about them:

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 1 NOVEMBER 1988
UPDATE: I started keeping track of memberships as they came in, I
just didn't let everyone know what their membership number was. Your
membership number is:

BUCKLES: One member did not get his buckle, the UPS tracer was
successful and a claim is in process. From now on I'm going to send
the letter and buckle separately but I need to hear from you right
now if you did NOT receive your buckle. The buckles are made just
like coins were in 1964; the back is nickel and the front is a layer
of real sterling silver. Silver plating is about .0004", the silver
on the buckle is .025"; I wear a silver overlay buckle that I've been
wearing every day for 13 years and it looks great, so don't worry
about wearing your buckle. If the demand is high enough more buckles
can be made for us, the cost is $ 50 if the order is for 100 and it
is prepaid. If you want one to wear and one for your collection we
can start working toward a second order for 100 buckles.

NEWSLETTER NUMBER 6 1990
THERE HAVE BEEN A NUMBER OF QUESTIONS ABOUT THE CLUB BUCKLE SO IILL TRY TO ANSWER ALL OF THEM AT ONCE. ALL OF THE CLUB BUCKLES DID NOT HAVE THE MEMBERSHIP NUMBER ON THEM, I MATCHED THEM UP WHENEVER POSSIBLE. THE CLUB BUCKLE WAS DONE BY GIST ENGRAVERS OF BENICIA, CA.; THEY ARE MINTED, JUST LIKE SILVER COINS,IN FACT THEY ARE ALMOST EXACTLY LIKE THE 40% SILVER KENNEDY HALF DOLLAR MADE IN 1964. THERE ARE TWELVE BUCKLES LEFT, THEY DO NOT HAVE THE BRONZE OVERLAY ON THE LOGO AND LETTERING, THEY ARE PLAIN SILVER. THEY ARE NOW AVAILABLE TO ALL CLUB MEMBERS ON A FIRST COME BASIS FOR $100 EACH.

FROM 1-05-2001 POST BY VERN TAYLOR, RE: BUCK BUCKLES

1. Vern Taylor
There are two others that I know about. In the 70's the Texas rep, Dean Washmon, had some made of leather. They had the old "Hammer & Bolt" logo. Dean gave them to all of the Buck reps and Don Ham (Buck sales manager) got them into the Buck sales stream somehow, I can't remember the details.

In 1983, Facet Designs Inc. (they made the Classic handles) made 200 out of silver. Buck never sold them but all of the Buck executives got one. I bought all that were left and used 100 of them for the launching of the Buck Collectors Club; a buckle came with the first 100 lifetime memberships (founding members). The next 150 members were called "charter members" and got the 1990 club knife (a Sawby lock #531), as did founding members.

There were also several other buckles made by employees, but only a few of each one.

I saw Plumerdv's buckle for sale, but didn't know enough about these to know whether it was a good deal or not. Seems like it was a good deal after reading all the info he posted from the newsletters.

I'm guessing from the information that if one is numbered 100 or less that it may have been one given out to the first BCCI members.

It also sounds like they will hold up very well if used daily.

I dont have anything else to add on the buckle question. In fact, I am grabbing the quotes by Vern that are posted in this thread and putting them in my file for future reference. Somewhere, Buck has 2 BCCI buckles stored away but I havent seen them in a long while. I thought there was more on the BCCI buckle than is on the buckle in the original post but I may be all wrong. Nice buckle regardless!

Thanks Joe and welcome back. Long time no see.

After giving it some thought, I'm not surprised that there's nothing on the buckle about the BCCI. Reading Vern's post from 2001 it appears that the buckles were made before the BCCI existed and weren't made for the club to begin with. He aquired the one's left over and used them for the club.

Vern said that the buckles were made in 1983, five years before the club was even formed, so if there was to be anything on them regarding the BCCI it would have had to been added after Vern got them.

Perhaps the one in this thread (http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php/1056587-BCCI-Silver-Buckle?highlight=buckle) is the one Vern referred to in the 1990 newsletter. The timeline is about right, so we may be talking about two totally different buckles.
