Hello,
I bought these knives today without really knowing a whole lot about them. I had to buy them then or let them go, so I took a chance. It was only 200.00, so even if I stepped in it, won't hurt too bad. I was particularly interested in this shrade-walden switchblade. Stamp on the blade says shcrade walden NY U.S.A.. I also got a cattaraugus 225q and four schrade slip joint folders in the deal. Any info on the swithblade or the others, value or otherwise, is greatly appreciated

Your SW switchblade was made sometime 1947-1958, but probably a little ways into the 1950s rather than late 1940s. The celluloid handles are really quite charming.

thanks for the info. yes, the celluloid is cool. I can't believe it is still intact, I thought that it usually deteriorated after it was this old. The knife is otherwise, in great condition too. Both of the springs are still good and the blades are in pretty good condition, other than the scratches. I don't think that they have been sharpened. Very little blade play as well

I have a knife with celluloid covers that was made 1904 to 1917 which is in perfect condition, and a good many others from the 1920s to 1960 that are just fine. And one that wasn't, but I sold it to someone who understood that it was going bad. It was bad when I bought it and did not change for five years while I owned it. Yellow and cracked ice seem to be the most at risk and smooth black the least (in my limited observation). I think most of the bad ones are either already gone or showing signs of going. As far as I know American companies quit it by 1961 so it has had time to show its colors (so to speak). I hear it said that they will all go sooner or later but I am not so sure. As long as they have congenial ambient conditions, that is. Quien sabe?

Really nice Safety Push Button knife. That is a great find in that condition. I like that handle design better than most. Almost a spider web. You might find this picture I found somewhere interesting.
