Need some input about original HR sheath

I got a first gen Howling Rat without a sheath for about half a year. I recently bought the original SRKW sheath on the secondary market. After receiving the sheath by mail the question came I my head if it really is made for the HR.

It is a SRKW leather sheath but the inside is about one inch longer than the knife and the upper part is very tight. After a few times taking the HR in and out of the sheath I notest it eats up my Res-C!

Is it the original HR sheath or is it made for a larger knife??? will post pics later

Thanks for your input

here's a pic i stole from progunners sale thread to show the sheath...

is this what you got?

note: progunner, let me know if you want me to unlink your photo and it is done.

Here is a pic. of mine in the factory sheath and a aftermarket one.
When the knife is in the factory sheath the leather does go halfway over the handle and will smooth but not really damage the Res-C.

I think I got ripped off! It probably is a SRKW sheath but not the HR one! I’m ganne contact the seller to work something out. If that fails I will make it a ‘’Ugly’’. (Edit: a changed the lines a bit because a changed view )

Does someone have any good ideas for fixing this problem?

This I my sheath (don’t look at the colure of the leather, it’s darker because leather-oil treatment)

Hi Pietje,

That is the factory Howling Rat sheath and is identical to the pictures posted above. That sheath is used by SRKW for several different knives, including the Howling Rat, Bandicoot, Rat Hunter, Bog Dog, etc, so the sizing may not be a custom fit for the Howler.

Hope this helps.

360joules,

Is it really!? The sheath is to big and to small in some areas. It really makes me think it is made for a bit larger Swam Rat knife or even a Busse (didn’t they also made this type of sheaths?).

My sheath is also not identical from the ones pictured by Swizzle and Tbaugh7. It has a rounder curve at the bottom (more round than square). Maybe dimensions will help: It is about 8 1/16 inch long and 2 1/2 inch wide at top when squished together.

Excuse my un-knowledge in this subject. I really think/thought it is made for a different knife then the HR. But it can be that I’m wrong that’s why I don’t call any names, yet;)

I see what you mean about the shape differences, I hadn't noticed that before my last post. I would still say that it's a SRKW small knife sheath, though. The Swamp has had a few different "incarnations" of their standard sheath with slight differences such as this. Again, I say "small knife sheath" because it is not made solely for the HR.

The bottom line, though, is that you're unhappy with it. If you are interested in something different, I'm sure that there are many here who could give you some recommendations for custom sheath makers. ;)

Good luck in your decision, bro!

Thanks for your thoughts about this 360joules! I will do some thinking about it, keep it or maybe buy a other sheath.

If somebody has any other thoughts about the sheath let me know.

Is anything written on the back ?

Wow! Learn something new every day! ;) Very striking resemblance. :D

I wouldnt worry so much about the sheath Piet, no two are alike. I've had several in time and none of them have a whole lot of resemblance to each other. The company that makes them rushes them out the door by the thousands with little or no QC. At the price they charge for them its understandable why they'd want the sheath to fit multiple knives, and no I wont tell y'all what they charge.

If you intend to do more than store the knife in the sheath, I'd go with an aftermarket rig, its worth the cost and its easier on the knife. :)

Was it the same shape sheath as the I have or the pictured by TBAUGH7?
Yes, it was exactly the same. ;)

In this pic, you can see where the handle was making contact with the sheath..

I despise the factory sheath. Mine sliced out of the side of it when I was trying to shove it in the sheath the other day because the thing was way too tight. I'll be getting a new one soon. Probably kydex.

My factory sheath was the plastic insert/cordura sheath.

No great shakes there also.

Got a MtMike similar to the one in the pic. Never looked back. This was 2002/early 2003.

Get an aftermarket sheath. The knife is worth it.
