Need some input on VG-10 durability

Hey guys, I want to get a Spyderco as a gift for a coworker to replace one he lost(it was of those little stainless non lock spydies, his first foray into the community) Needs to be less than 3 inches, able to take a beating, and not too pricey. I'm thinking a delica or dragonfly something like that but I have no experience with VG-10, wondering how it performs, how well it holds an edge etc any real world input is appreciated.

I carried my ATR PE every day for just about 10 years no issues, had plenty of unforgiving use with my day job

To me, in the grand scheme of things, VG10 is still an 'above average' steel in the knife world. It's fairly soft and nothing to write home about as far as edge rentention IMO, but it does take a keen edge and is pretty corrosion resistant. You could definitely do worse! I think it would make a superb gift for your coworker.

I'll put it this way: I don't even really like VG10, but if a coworker of mine gave me Delica or some other Spyderco in VG10, I'd be all smiles. That's a really nice thought and gift. :D

One of the best steels before going into powdered steels and a good balance between corrosion resistance, edge performance and ease in sharpening.

Exactly, and the reasons why, 13 years after using it for the first time, it's still my favorite steel.

As for the OP's situation, VG-10 isn't "bulletproof", no steel is. However, IMHO, if someone damages a VG-10 Spyderco, they would have done as much or more damage to one in any other steel.

Vg10 is a good steel. Better than aus 8 and 8cr13mov. Holds a edge well. Its middle of the road when rated against all other steels. I personally like Spyderco vg10 very much

He has a vacation house in a little mountain town that he let's me and the family use on a monthly basis and won't take anything for it, so I thought it would be a good way to say thanks :)

Thanks for the help guys, appreciate it, sounds like it should work out good. i have a broad range of steels but just never got around to getting a VG-10. I know he'd be better off with one of the super steels but the thing will get beaten to death so better to go with a lower price point :D

VG10 is nearly perfect in my opinion. It holds an edge well, it is pretty stainless and is easy to maintain and sharpen. I will take VG10 over S30v or ZDP any day.

Some super steels exhibit better traits but for someone who uses a strop and a sharp maker only VG10 is about perfect.

IMHO.....Ymmv....ect

I have several damascus knives with VG-10 cores. VG-10 is sharp and holds edge well, in my experience. Like others said, an above average steel.

i own a bunch of spyderco's in VG10,and never any problems with chipping or rusting/pitting!it is vary easy to sharpen, but i find the new edge will not last vary long when compared to the newer steels coming out now!but much better then 8cr13mov or even the older gin 1,so yes lots better the average, the dragonfly would be a really nice gift at a cool price.

I agree with this Brother all the way ;) But the other guys are right too because VG-10 is not in the same league as some of these newer supersteels are. I still can't get over the sensational performance and luck I've had with M390>> but if you go that route you better get some good lessons on sharpening because it's even a bit more difficult to hone than ZDP-189 is IMO.

But VG-10 has for years been one of my favorite everyday usage blade steels. I own so many Spyderco "Users" with that steel and I've never had any problem. It sharpens up very nicely and you can get an edge that bites really well with.

Also there is another aspect of VG-10 that few people realize>> it's one of the few blade steels that Spyderco uses that performs very well in plain edge and Spyderedge both. Most of the blade steels I've used of Spyderco's over the years tend to do well with either PE or SE but very rarely do I find a blade steel that performs really well with both edge types. But VG-10 is one of them for sure IMO.

You won't care about the steel in the Delica. Once you get it in hand the ergos will sell themselves to 90% of the ppl that handle it. Sure you'll have other knives that will pull you away that's the nature of a knife forum right?

But the ergos on the Delica are irrefutable to many.

I haven't used it as much as some steels, but I remember back about 16 years ago trying it and liking it! To me, it seemed like a tougher version of 154CM and it took a finer edge. If it's all I had now, I'd be fine with it. Luckily there are so many options for us enthusiasts!

I am also a fan of VG10. Strikes a nice balance between edge holding and ease of sharpening. It gets very sharp. I like the warm color and it's very corrosion resistant. Spyderco offers other interesting steel options and I've been exploring them over the past few years, but I don't think you could go wrong with an FFG (full flat ground) Delica in VG10. A high performance classic!

Just the fact that VG-10 has been one of the main blade steels offered in so many models over the years and up till now has not had a successor to replace it ought to speak loudly to most of us. I remember a thread some time back comparing VG-10 to the blade steel it replaced back in the late 90s>> it replaced ATS-55 for all intent and purposes. Which is interesting because I always liked ATS-55 and I still have a few user models with that blade steel.

But I do remember Sal saying that when they tested VG-10 against ATS-55 it won out by a considerable margin when they compared to two steels side by side. And look at how long that has been. And I'm sure if there were another Japanese blade steel that would have beat out VG-10 without a huge cost increase I'm sure that VG-10 would have already been history for their main Japan models.

Honestly VG10 will always be one of my favourite steels. I find it is right in the sweet spot where it has great edge retention without getting to the point where it is a PITA to sharpen.

VG-10 is one of the best ingot blade steels on the market. Good edge retention, good corrosion resistance and good toughness.

VG-10 rocks. Could not be happier with my knives in VG-10 and they have an excellent track record & get hair popping sharp, as it were.

Especially fond of my Spyderco-Perrins - i.e. the Beat and the Street.

These are some of my favorite production knives. I have a couple of each. Once sold a Street Bowie and had to buy it (and a spare) again.

I wont ever be without one of each in the 'inventory' ever again.

If he's gonna use it hard, beat on it, skip the Dragonfly and get the Delica. The Dragonfly is a scalpel. The Delica is more versatile and durable, IMHO.

VG10 is a great steel, and my next Delica will likely be in VG10, just like my last one was.
