I went to tj maxx today, and found 5 laguiole knives, including some vinters knives for about 12 bucks a piece. They are in little wood boxes, and marked 440. I believe that they are either staminawood or wood. they look kind of cheap, though, they sure aint sharp, even from just looking at them. If they're worth anything, I'll rush back to buy whatever they have, but if not, i'll leave them. I don't know if they're fakes, but the packaging is nice. Any help? Joe

I picked up a small folder just as you described, They aren't worth anything as far as I know. Definetly not sharp. Like you I thought I had stumbled on to something. Nope just a cheap little folder. I read that the shepards in France would stick the blade into the ground to pry as the pins in the handle form a cross when looking at them blade down. Unfortunately they cross is upside down on mine and don't think the shepards prayed to an upside down cross. I am not religious but I think that is bad? Sorry to burst your bubble if they are the same as the one I picked up. Well at least I have a lagiuole "style" knife in my collection. Hope this helped, Take Care!!!

I have one, mine has plastic handles imitating wood, it came sharpened at a very obtuse angle with an uneven edge and a large burr, when closed the edge rests on the spring, the steel is on the soft side so it was very easy to reprofile.

Not a particularly good knife, but not that bad for the price, I gave it an accute edge and managed to put a small strip of duct tape inside for the blade to rest on (so the edge won´t dull from being against the spring) and I always close it gently.

I´ve used it only lightly, slicing bread, cutting foam, and as a cigar cutter, it has held well, I feel the edge won´t hold much with hard use but is easy to resharpen.

If you want an inexpensive French knife I believe an Opinel will serve you much better, if you like the looks of the Laguiole, it´s not that bad.

It doesn´t seem like a fake, I believe it´s a cheap but true Laguiole knife, after all, a Laguiole is any knife made in a particular place in France.

I have the same one as Don Luis; What a disappointment the Brand was 'Jean Dubost' which I found out means "$hitty knife for your jeans" in French

I saw them also but I was really turned off by the piss poor fit and finish :barf:

I was at tj maxx the other day, and say a knife like that in a wooden boxes. Was going to buy it but saw it didn't fold. It was just a parrying knife made to look like Laguiole. :(

ugly too.

Nice stuff, but some of the products, the French and Spanish knives, seem a bit pricey. Anyone got a good source for ratcheting Navaja's? Sorry don't mean to hi-jack the thread. :D

Hello

If you really like the look of the Laguiole then spend the money and buy a real one from one the renowed brands. The topic of brands has been discussed yesterday.

Buying cheap copies, mostly not manufactured in France, just calls for lower quality and moreover dirties the reputation of a wonderful knife. It is like buying a chinese Randall, I suppose most of you would find it insulting if I said : "oh yes I've found a Randall for $20; it has a plastic handle looking like stag and the blade is some 440, but even with this edge unable to cut soft bread I feel happy cause it really looks like a Randall"
