Afternoon Ladies and Gents, I stumbled upon a small box containing a number of my late Father in-laws patches from serving in the Marines. I know nothing about them nor does my wife but she wishes to make a shadowbox so she wants to know what we have. After her many google searches she turns to me and asks what they are. If anyone can shed some light on what I have, proper layout, I'm especially curious about the multi-colored triangular patch.

Thank you for looking.

The single chevron is for pfc (private first class). The chevron with crossed rifles is lance corporal. The chevron pins are probably a collar device. I'm guessing the eagle, globe & anchor pins were applied to hats.

I'm sure some marines will eventually comment to be more specific. A quick internet search might help on which class of uniform they would apply to.

All of your patches are currently upside down in the picture. The points should point up.

The 4 with just a single chevron are the insignia for "Private First Class" or E2. (E1s or "Privates" wear no insignia.)

The 5 chevrons with crossed rifles are insignia for E3, or "Lance Corporal".

The "green on red" insignia are sewn on the Marine's Service Dress coat.

The "green on green" insignia are sewn on the khaki Service class B or Service Class C shirts.

I don't know of any situation in which a Marine would have a 7th Army shoulder patch, other than as a souvenir from an altercation with an Army puke. :D

All the rank chevrons are upside down.

Has me wondering also. Was he in Germany in the 1950's - 1960's?

PFC rank has a rocker, those are E2 private. Not sure what the crossed rifles signify on USMC rank. I'm sure someone will come along here in a minute set you straight on the rank, as far as what the crossed rifles denote.

Japan 75-78.... I know he collected about anything Military related he could find. in the box also was a number of live rounds as well as a handful of grenade pins

Besides being up side down. The single chevron are PFC,The single chevron with red around them are for his service coat. The single chevron with crossed rifles are Lance Corporal. The Eagle Globe and Anchor insignia one is for his Garrison cover(hat) and the other goes on the lapel of his service coat. The PFC insignia pins go his collar of his Shirt.

And the term Leathernecks comes from the leather collar they once wore .
