New guy here. I'm going to be investing in my first quality axe, and have been looking in the 19-20" range, so it's not too hard to pack it into the backcountry. I've narrowed it down to the Gransfors Bruk SFA, and the Wetterlings Backcountry (formerly Large Hunting) axe. For nearly the same price (GB is $5 more expensive where I've been looking), which would you choose? It will be more for wood processing, and I'll have a saw along (Bahco Laplander) for sectioning. And I'm not real into carving with an axe yet, so I'd imagine this would be a relatively small part of the axe's duties. Your thoughts?:)

I don't have any experience with the Wetterlings, but I have a GB SFA and I have absolutely no regrets in purchasing it. It a great all-around axe and has been great at everything I've used it for. It's not a great splitter unless you are referring to the Ray Mears-style small branch splitting, but it cuts and chops very well, the steel is top of the line, and even after some heavy use on some really weird, exotic wood it held its edge and didn't even need to be sharpened afterwards.

My GB has been just a pleasure to use. I remember hearing the Wetterlings was sub par these days, but I could definitely be wrong about that. good luck.

Thanks for the input, fellas. Some things have come up, and I'll have to delay my purchase a little while, but I'm going with the SFA when I get the cash.
