Need Some Opinions on a Messy 2OT

Hey Guys, I just picked a 2OT up from a local gun show for a whopping $25. Of course, it has some issues, mainly with the handles. The front bone slab is broken through two pins, with only the forward handle pin holding it in place. It rocks back and forth on this pin freely. The rear pin has been knocked free from the liner sodder, and slides freely in and out of the hole. The rear slab is cracked in almost an identical line to the front break, from the rear pin through the spring pivot pin and then forward, with a piece missing near the spring pivot pin. It seems as though some knucklehead used the knife as a hammer, whacking it in the area of the spring pin, as there are a couple of dings to the liners in this area:mad: . My question is: Do I get it re-handled in a nice bone, or do I leave it as is. I'm actually leaning towards the re-handle idea, as it's absolutely unusable in this condition, and looks pretty awful to boot, especially for a knife like this. What do you think?

I'd send it to Orvet or MM and ask them to do their magic. The blades look fairly full, and it could still be a beauty.

That's just what I was thinking Thawk. BTW, I've got Rusty1 to thank for this one, he's the one who spotted it in a carboard box full of beaters:thumbup:

Eric, quite some time ago I sent a jigged bone knife to Kaleb (MM) for repair. It had a sizable chunk of bone missing from one side adjacent to the bolster. Kaleb spliced in a piece of old salvaged bone, matching the color and jigging. One has to really look close to see that it is a repair. His skill has only improved since then. I'd suggest letting him repair the existing bone scale. You won't want to use the knife anyway, but it will make it presentable as an example of the type.

Michael

Thanks Michael, I'll drop Kaleb a line. I'd really hate to lose the bone if I didn't have to, since I've never seen another modern bone with this same patina. Kind of reminds me of the mahogany stained oak trim in old Craftsman style homes. I wonder if they mixed a little tar into the dye like the trim guys did with the old stain:confused::D

Good luck with the knife Eric, whichever way you decide to go whether it be total replacement of the bone or just repair.

That is nice old bone. Schrade used that same type and smooth style of bone on the Heritage Series Knives in the 80's. It will be fun to see what you end up with. Since it is in rough shape, and you don't have much into the purchase, there isn't much to lose.

Didn't Rusty1 hand you that after he had the pearl in hand ? :D

Thanks Hal and Joel! It was pretty unexpected to say the least.

Fran, In hand and paid for, with nary a hint!:(:D:D:D To those of you who are in the dark here, Fran, Russell, and myself checked out the gun and knife show in Middletown, NY this past Saturday. Russell found a sweet Schrade Cut. 2 bld pearl senator with multiple threads on the bolsters. I'd never seen one like it before, but Russell, if you read this, it's No. 7706B on page 39 of the Schrade Cut. Co. catalog:

Excellent find Eric! :thumbup::thumbup:

I think some amber bone from Culpepper should match that old bone pretty close.

Thanks for showing the catalogue cut Eric, That's the one! I will post pics of it as soon as I can get to take some shots.

G'day Eric, There are many options for your 2OT and I know you also have better example<s>. I have one which obviously had multiple issues and it has been repaired and dyed?I'm more inclined to see if it can be retrieved and your blades really are quite full.My repair is reasonably obvious <on right in first photo> however overall still has that original 2OT "mystique" rather than going with the obvious option of replacing both scales and run the risk of having something Taylor could have dreamed/burped up on the carpet like his other Chinee creations!
$25 was a great price as there were only ever 13000 odd out there in Schrade land originally from 1959/62?.
Photos attached for your info and also to show color wise why each was an individual. Hoo Roo

Larry, yep, you're right about the repair (epoxy?), still unmistakably a 2OT. I personally think the handles really make the knife, there's no mistaking it from it's Cut Co predecessor, even from a distance. I'll sit on it a while and think about it, as it's really growing on me in it's present state. The poor wounded pup kind of makes you feel sorry for it. Ideally, if i could miraculously find some original slabs (which I believe would be harder than finding another 3OT!),or maybe some of the old peachseed, which is at least the same period, I wouldn't hesitate. Culpepper's are close, but still...
Here's a shot of it's healthier brethren:

Eric,
I do have 4 sets of Schrade jigged bone. They might fit it, not sure how wide the 2OT is.

As mentioned by Eric in a prevoius thread. not in bad condition for a knife possibly over eighty years old. All for the sum of $20.00
