Welcome to BladeForums. :)

You've come to a great place to learn as knives as a teenager---it's where I started out as well several years ago.

I myself would forego all the knives you've mentioned. I've never heard of Severtech, and thus can't commend on the quality of their knives, nor have I handled the Janisong. However, since you're young you might want to start your collection of with something you can use and use with simplicity and ease. Of all the knives you mentioned, the Dozier makes the most sense. It's a great little EDC, and it won't break your bank. Soon you'll have to be paying for gas and possibly a car, and it'll be money you'll appreicate---I've been there.

I want to recommend Spyderco. Take a look at their line---for the prices you're talking about spending, you can get some great things for even more competitive prices. The Native comes to mind---made in America with excellent S30V steel for under $50. Also, check out the Delica, Endura, and, if you're willing to go a week being broke, the Military, Police3, etc.

Also, you might want to consider ordering from New Graham Knives if you're ordering online. They have great customer service and are unbelievably helpful and reliable.

Good luck, and God bless.

Wade

P.S.: Don't be a troll.

Forget the Severtech. You have to be of legal age and fullfill several requirements that at age 15 would probably be hard to do. As far as the other two, go for the Dozier and save up for the Janisong.:)

As the previous folks have said, if given a choice between the 3, I'd pick Dozier as well.

I guess it makes sense to ask what you are looking for in a knife first. If you are looking for basic EDC tasks, a Spyderco Byrd/Delica or Benchmade Grip/mini Grip are fine choices. Or maybe a Kabar Dozier ($20ish) + Swiss Army Knife would be a great beginning combo.

I remember when I was 15 (turning 21 in less than a month). I recommend a victorinox swiss army knife, benchmade griptilian or kershaw blur. All 100$ or less. Sweet knives. If you want something useful pick up a victorinox swisstool. I know having a cool looking knife is probably up on the list, as i know i was proud of my fast opening knives back then, but in the later years youll probably be going back to the knife you first bought, i know i do. Don't rush it, be patient for sure and the outcome will be good. After that knife, youll want to invest in a sharpening kit, like the spyderco sharpmaker. Love mine. Feel free to private message me if youd like.

He's got a point. Those two would cover a lot of everyday use situations and get you started without a big bill to pay.

I've got a Thorn and a Severtech, never touched a Janisong. Of the 3, only the Thorn is a good every day knife, but it looks enough like a dagger (because it is a dagger) to be a problem under some circumstances. It's still a great gentleman's knife, with a razor-sharp blade and very snappy action, a kind of double-click on opening. It may be smaller than you think.

The Severtech is one of the knife world's great workhorses. It is massive and heavy and can cut through anything any other knife might. It even scares me. :p Save yourself the expense for now and get something more user-friendly.

You could also go over to our Boker forum and read about a few of my favorite knives, all inexpensive compared to what you were looking at: the Subcom, the Trance, and the M-Type. All very strong, reasonably sharp, framelocks. Subcoms are small, come in different blade shape models. Trance also has different blades. M-Type is larger than the others, 440C steel, really sharp, a favorite of mine, up there with my Spydercos.

Have you checked out a couple of the lower end Spyderco's? I really shouldn't say lower end because all of their knives are really great.

Some one's to check out.

Salt 1 or Pacific Salt. Rust proof, and durable.
Delica or Endura. VG-10 blades, screw construction, lock back.

I'm not to familiar with BM's, but I know you can get a mini grip for around $60. Kershaw has some great knives for under $80.

thanks for the advice il drop the severtech... but this wouldn't be my first knife and i already know how to flip butterfly's... witch do you think has a better blade shape/profile?

I've offered my recommendations---just wanted to comment on the legal issues of carrying a butterfly knife. The implications of being a juvenile carrying a balisong and being questioned by the authorities could be very bad---juvenile court at worst, confiscation at best. If you're looking for a knife for the collection, I'd say go for it---if you're looking to carry it, consider the ramifications of being questioned by an LEO while carrying it.
