which is the more useful knife in everybodys opinion and what are the uses of both the esee 4 and the esee 5

The 5 was designed as a downed pilots knife more or less. It can be used in a pinch for things you should not use a knife for e.g. prying.

The 4 is just a good general use knife. Small enough to carry but thick enough for all knife tasks.

For me I want the 4. As a shit hit the fan knife I'd take the 5.

The 4 and the 5 are sort of different knives. The 5 is a brickhouse tank of a work horse that's somewhat of a jack of all trades but master of none (it can pry, but it's not a prybar, it can chop but it's not a machete or a hatchet, it can carve but it's not a smaller thinner knife). This is I'm sure why the SERE guys like it so much, it does everything you need it to do well enough to be the only knife you effectively need in an extreme survival situation.

The 4 is more of an "all-purpose" knife similar to the 3, but is designed to be a little tougher and harder use than the 3. It's also a "jack of all trades" like the 5, but is definitely better at a few things (carving, skinning, smaller tasks like that) than the 5 is.

For me the 4 would be an EDC knife, while the 5 would be better suited for hiking and camping.

But what works for me... might not be the same for you...

If you're even asking that question, trust me, get the 4.

The five is not a knife. It's a spare boat anchor, a crowbar, a splitting wedge, etc. It's a tank of a knife that shouldn't ever be wondered about. You either need it and know you need it, or don't.

If you don't post saying "I may need to cut myself out of a burning aircraft, pry open doors, and save the world" ..... you don't need a five.

Don't take this as "OMG the 5 is sooooo awesome I need to get it to be that awesome"

If you need a general use woods knife, the 5 is going to be a disappointment, and a heavy lesson to carry around. I love my 5, very much. But I don't think it's the first knife I'd goto for hiking/woodsbummin'

EDIT: from your name I'm assuming you hunt. I wouldn't want to dress out a deer with a 1/4" thick blade.
I use my 5 as an around camp knife, mostly when I wanna baton some crap for no reason. I do hike with it from time to time. It's a nice knife, but I realize it's limits, and it's never the only blade I carry.
the 4 I use as an EDC, and while hiking. I'd take it solo no problem. Shorter handle, but comfy. If you need a bigger all around knife, go 6. I use the 4 for everything you could use a knife for. nothing it can't handle.

Some people would say the 3 would be a better EDC and the 4 would be a better camp knife and the 5 is just a sharpened crowbar that is overkill and only a good showpiece. Some wouldn't EDC anything bigger than an Izula. It's all in perspective. ;)

Oh I agree...

I EDC a Izula right now. I was only trying to show the OP how only the 4 or 5 would fit into my life.

depending on what you want to use it for id say a 4, i havent found any regular knife tasks the 4 cant handle. But if you want something to dig or pry or do large amounts of batoning with id say a 5

none of esee knives are show pieces.........

The ESEE-5 is the least used for all my needs.

it's the 4 or 6 and then Junglas I grab most often.
