Ok, heres the story. I got a new computer last night, we started it up at the guys house ( the guy who made it) and it ran perfectly, we installed windows, and some drivers. Now, i took it home, and then i left it, and i went to sleep. I got it up and running perfectly this morning, i went to install a file(game) and i stuck the cd in, i installed it which also went well, but then when i tried to run it, it made this AWFULL WRETCHID grinding/rattling noise!!!! i knew something was wrong. Long story short, now my dvd rom drive is not reading any cds! Im going to call the guy, but its 9:40, so i'll wait a few more minutes. But in the mean time, can anyone help me out? im really stumped.

Is it fixable?
should i just replace it?

hey :)

have the guy replace it.

did you buy it used in london? from a guy with the initials S.W?

dont sweat it man, its just a dvd-rom.

I run into this type of problem when taking CD's burned on one system to another. CD R/W's are the worst. Format on one machine, take it to another identical machine and, no joy. Reformat on the new machine and everything is fine.

I would completely power it down for a few minutes and then power it up again. Sometimes that's all it takes.

It sounds like an out of box failure of the drive. You shouldn't have a problem getting it exchanged if you bought the parts from a reputable place. If you bought them all online, then you will have a bit more of a hassle with shipping it back and all. There's nothing your friend could have done wrong to make the machine make noises like that.

Wish me luck. When I'm done with my post here, I'm going to spend an hour backing my stuff up, then nuking my computer to install a new motherboard, CPU and memory. In the process I'm going to re-format my hard drive and start over as I'm not happy with the way I currently have it partitioned.

Best of luck with your box.

Hello everyone, i took it to the guy and in about ten minutes he showed me how to fix it.

What happened was, at some point a little plastic clip which broke off of the inside pof the drive caused a torsion spring which usually reliest\ on that plastic tab caused all of the optical readers to fall off track. That is why the drive wasnt reading anything.

The problem is its not a permanent fix. im going to have to replace the drive. Im either debating on getting a 56x cd rom, or a 16x dvd rom. I dont watch dvd movies on my comp, but is the dvd equivalent to a 16x cd rom?

It is 16x DVD/40X CD rom. I'd probably go with a CDRW if you can only have one drive for space/price reasons. That way you can do regular back-ups. You do back up your data right???

My preferred combo is a DVD rom and a CDRW so I can do just about anything from watching movies to making CDs.
