Heya,

I got my knife from www.martialartsgear.com yesterday. Its a fantasy knife by Gil Hibben and called 'Dragon Lord' its a very beautiful piece of art in my opinion. As far as I can make out its made from 420J2 stainless steel. I have NO clue what that means.

It doesn't appear to be sharp. I've tested the edge on it. It doesn't want to cut paper. I tested it carefully with my fingers and hands. Nothing. It doesn't cut, which is good since I bought it for the looks and not because I needed a knife.

What I need to know is how to maintain it. How to keep it nice and shiny. I see it as a display knife and it should be on display so people visiting me can see it and maybe examine it.

I heard on another forum about a guy that browsed a weapons dealer for guns. After holding and examining a gun he wiped it clean of finger prints. This apparently shocked the guy behind the counter, and the man explained that he wiped the gun for fingerprints so he wouldn't leave moist and grease marks on it that would cause the gun to rust. So I need to know if something similar can happen to my knife and how I prevent it.

I've never had a knife before. So I need to know the basics of how to maintain a display knife.

The steel used in that knife is very corrosion-resistant. Wipe it off occasionally with any decent oil on a soft cloth and it should stay nice and shiny for a long time.

Two questions arise from your answer:

What oil would you recommend?

Should I wipe the entire knife with this oil or just the blade or just the metallic parts?

I would recommend Sentry Solutions Tuff Cloth and just do the metal components(at least that is all I would do.

Very good answer. This is exactly what I use on all of my knives. I use the liquid to lube the folders and the impregnated cloth to wipe the knives after I wash them.

Since the knife is not going to be used for food preparation you don't need to worry about that aspect of it.

I wipe the whole knife, handle and all usually. Haven't had any problems yet.

I sell fantasy knives in my shop and have never had any problem with 420J2, or any of the other 400 series stainless steels due to handling. For your edification, 420J2 is a stainless used alot in folding knife liners, and has been used extensively by the Japanese as a "laminate" over the outside of high end steels like VG-10 so the core can be hardened to 60+ Rockwell and still give the blade some "flexibility" without breaking. Being a more inexpensive steel, it's very good for display stuff as it doesn't corrode easily, and takes a good polish. It all has to do with the amount of chromium in the steel formula.

I hope its alright I revive this thread.

I recently purchased a sword, a scottish claymore. A sharp one. And I have a false edged katana. I think the claymore is made of EN45 steel, does that sound correct? I don't even know if there is a type of named that.

Anyway, the guy selling me that claymore told me I could use WD-40 oil to grease it with. Is that ok for the knife and katana too? I don't know what kind of steel the katana is made from, but would it get damaged if I accidentally used the wrong oil? Assuminng I'm smart enough to avoid oils with water in them.
