Hey Blade Forum. Just got my even heat KH414 in. Very excited about it. I got my O1 recipe preset in there but am looking for some recipes for the following stainless steels that I am going to start running tests on (note: most will be 1/8).

AEB-L
Nitro V
CPM154

if you could put it in rampmaster terms that would be awesome. For example: wrap in heat treat foil, Ramp as fast as possible to 1450, insert blade, let soak for 20 minutes, then ramp to 1600 let soak for 10 minutes, plate quench, Cryo or dry ice slurry, then temper at 400 for 2 hours x 2.

This will help me tremendously!

I am not the expert. My understanding:

Treat Nitro V the same as AEB-L.
All 3 steels should be wrapped in heat treat foil, unless you have a super fancy argon purge system or something.
All 3 steels respond best to cryo. If not cryo, dry ice slurry. If not slurry, even a freezer helps a little.
^ to shortcut some expected arguments, my source : https://knifesteelnerds.com/2018/12/03/cryogenic-part1/ - "Therefore even a freezer can transform some the retained austenite when heat treating tool steels."
Ramp rates are always as fast as possible.
Soak, per the usa knifemaker link below, is generally 1 hour per inch of thickness, with a linear scaling.

AEB-L
lots of info and recipes. https://knifesteelnerds.com/2019/03/04/all-about-aeb-l/
Data from JT - https://www.bladeforums.com/threads/aebl-heat-treat-test-data.1591028/
My recipe, culled from information on the internet -
  • Foil wrap
  • Max ramp to 1725 F
  • Insert blade, soak 20 minutes
  • Plate quench (we're not done)
  • Max ramp to 1975 F
  • Insert blade, soak 8 minutes
  • Plate quench
  • Dry ice slurry for about 20 minutes
  • Temper at 350 F for 2 hours, repeat twice. Target is 62 Rhc

CPM154
