What do you guys suggest for sharpening knives? this will be used to sharpen everything from kitchen knives to camping/hunting knives. Note i live in a apartment so getting a Bench grinder is outta the question even though i think its the best idea. So what stones are good? what other methods are there other than stones? Note i am a begginer so please try to keep that in mind.

Spyderco 204 Sharpmaker. Also see the thread "Sharpening Fallkniven
Convex Edge" it was a great help to me.

that looks like a great set! Anyone else use it, any other suggestions, note my budget is about what the 204 costs so please limit suggestions to products in that price range.

I've been using the Spyderco since the mid 70's and have never looked at anything else since.

I've been getting very good results with the Sharpmaker 204 and an old leather strop for finishing. However so many people have been talking about using the large flat sharpening stones, I've got to give them a try soon.....

The sharpmaker is the best for it's price range, IMO. You can get a better system, but it does cost a lot more. It's worth it if you want the absolute best, but the sharpmaker will give you just as good of a functional edge. One thing about the sharpmaker though, it's useless for reprofiling an edge. That's not a big shortcoming, you can easily get around it by getting a coarse bench stone and using the method Joe Talmadge explains in the Sharpening FAQ, http://www.bladeforums.com/features/faqsharp.shtml . You can get a decent 6" or 8" stone at any hardware store for less than $10 and it will save you lots of time and wear on your sharpmaker's ceramic stones.
