Hi all-

I've been reading this forum a lot lately, and think it's great- lots of good info, as my tastes have recently changed from just production knives.

I, like UW Mitch in his thread, have been trying to find a maker to build a knife for me. I know pretty much what I want, and was wondering if you guys knew of any one that would be interested in a project such as this one. What I'm after is a "dress" folder.
Locking liner, 3"- 3 1/2" utility shaped blade, 7"- 7 1/2" in length overall. I'd like nickel silver bolsters that comprise a 1/4 to a 1/3 of the total handle length, with the remaining portion done in tortoise shell. No pocket clip. Nothing terribly exotic, but I've got it in my head that that's what I want. Blade steel could be ATS-34, BG-42, or 420V.

I'm not really into damascus or heavily decorated filework and bolsters, just want something simple yet classy. So I was hoping maybe my description would trigger some referrals from you guys. Can you recommend any BF members that might do something like this?

I have talked to a couple makers already, with little success, too busy(I don't want to wait years) or not interested. So if you could- I'd appreciate any suggestions or recommendations.

Thanks much for the help-

How about Frank Centofante.I've always admired the clean lines and beautiful fit and finish of his knives.Although I have no idea what his wait time would be.

RDomina has good taste. It's hard to beat Frank Centofantes work. Excellent choice.

Clip. I have 3 questions;
1. Who have you talked to? That will help us to know what you like.

2. What did you learn from Mitch's threads? Why cover the same ground?

3. How is Honey?

PhilL-

To answer your questions as you asked them-

1.I'm not going to list their names after I said they couldn't or wouldn't help out. But if it helps you know who I like, man, where do I start? Mayo, Centofante, Horn, Pardue, Reif, Tighe, Downs, Simonich, Brend, Viele, Elishewitz, Reeve, I could name more, and these aren't really in any particular order. I just haven't yet seen one that makes me think "yeah- something like that!"

2. From Mitch's threads, I learned that it's best to be able to get to know the maker if possible and go to as many shows as you can. (Which, in Cleveland, Ohio, is like once a year, maybe) And that basically, the custom maker/buyer relationship is important to obtain THE knife you're after. And as far as covering the same ground, well gee, PhilL- sorry to put you out, man. I just thought maybe my description would inspire some help in the form of suggestions from fellow members. Which it has and thank you.

3. My dad's doing fine thanks.

Am I correct in guessing that these makers think tortoise is too fragile for full scales of that size?

If it's workable, I think that the silver and tortoise combo would look stunning on a Sawby Combat/Utility folder. Since he works in shells and stones regularly, if it can be done, he can do it.
