Ok -
I recently got a very old German Eye Brand Sodbuster that has seen better days. The wood was cracked and there was so much dirt between the liners, scales and springs that once wd40'd you could see right through it. Well and then the wood cracked some more. So I decided to make it my first rescaling project. I got the wood off and was able to get the 2 back pins out, so the spring is free now. The last part of dis-assembly is taking out the pivot pin. This one gives me some trepidation. It looks pretty specialized to me and I fear I'll have trouble replacing it if I destroy it taking it out. I already need to find pin stock for the other 2 pins though, but they looked to be pretty standard.
So first off can anyone tell me the best way of getting the pivot pin out, preferably without ruining it. Next, any preliminary words of caution or instructions on the best way to rescale would be greatly appreciated. I was hoping to rescale with a red or blue synthetic material (suggestions?), something that can be sanded and shaped relatively easily, but if that looks unfeasible I'll likely go with a nice wood. Here's the caveat - I have almost nothing in the way of tools and am looking to only pick up what's absolutely necessary right now. In the future I Hope to put together a better shop, but right now I can't afford the space or money for belt grinders, jigsaws and the like. I have some files, a hammer, a couple vice grips, etc.
So as you can see its going to be an uphill climb, but I'm excited by the challenge. Let me hear your thoughts and if you've had specific experience working on German Eye Sodbusters that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
