I've decided to get another knife for my very small but growing collection of slipjoints. There are two problems:

1. I don't really know what I want.
2. Resources are somewhat limited at the moment, mostly due to medical expenses.

So, maybe you guys can offer some suggestions. What I'm thinking of is this:

Must be $100 or less.

I'm thinking along the lines of a trapper or the like but that's not set in concrete, maybe a barlow. It should be a reasonably useful all round pocket knife. Handle material not important. Maybe something with a large and small blade.

Basically, I'm open to suggestions. Is there a good online store that has a range I could look at? Tell me what knife you would buy if you had no more than $100 to spend.

What do you have in your current collection?

A Case Sodbuster would be a great low cost addition.

Perhaps you should help narrow it down by stating what size range you are interested in.

Large knives? Small knives?

So many knives would meet your criteria that all you will get are folks' favorites which you can already see by looking at virtually any thread.

To get ideas on patterns you might be well served to look at this thread:

Buy Case Sodabuster as suggested and buy also a nice Case medium Stockman with beautiful handle ( bone, stag amber bone ) and you still have money to buy something... like a good bar of Chocolate.

You're right, I should have indicated a size preference. Among some others I currently have a Case Swayback Jack. This is about the size I'm looking for although something slightly larger would be OK.

I'm happy for people to talk about what they like, if others like them, maybe I will too.

I'll certainly check out the link.

Thanks.

Perhaps try something quite different, like a french Chambriard Le Compagnon?

I think the Case Texas Jack (3 5/8") would be something suitable for you and it offers two very useful blades. Easy to carry, good form and function:

I like the look of the Queen Country Cousin in D2. Is this a good quality knife, considering the price?

Hard to go wrong with a sodbuster...and a sodbuster in D2 is a true working tool. The comments in this forum on the Country Cousin have been very positive overall.

Damn, you guys shouldn't have started me off on this, I've got bills to pay! :)

I've just come across a Queen amber stag two blade gunstock in D2

So many knives ... so little money!

There are so many options, lucky you.

Frankly, I'd avoid a full size Trapper as they are rather big, the Mini Trapper is much more pocket friendly alternative approx 9cm/3.5" closed

Elliott already made a fine suggestion with the CASE Small Texas, the same size also gives you a 3 bladed Medium Stockman from CASE and others. Many handle choices.

Steels can be carbon, stainless or D2 in this price bracket.

One pattern I'm very fond of is the single blade Slimline Trapper (CASE stainless or carbon)and its counterpoint from Queen Cutlery the Utility Knife in D2 wood or bone handles. Other members are sure to elaborate, patterns such as Gunstock, Canoe,Whittler,Moose and others. Good luck and get well,a slip joint often signals the road to recovery!

I have these two stockmans and they are both beautifully made.
Both are just over 4" and are really elegant work knives. The Case can be had for around $50-00 and the Queen Cattle King is just under $100-00.
Both knives just feel so good in the hand are are both very substantial....
Good luck with your search and post pics of the winner.

Check out the swap thread up top. Trading is fun and a great way of trying something new without spending any cash.

Hard to go wrong with any of the choices here. I'm not sure about costs to ship to Australia, but you should be able to get either a Case or Queen sod buster and trapper and still stay in your budget.

I recommend both of these knives. I have both. The Chambriard will knock your socks off. The Texas Jack will wow you. Although the Texas Jack is also listed as Medium Jack in some stores.

Why not try a Chambriard since you already have a Case.

God Bless

I'd grab an S&M Barlow, if I were you.
Last year, I bought one for my dad for father's day, and really fell in love with it.

When I want a knife, but don't know what...I call that Jonesin' for a knife;)
I got that really bad a few months back and satisfied the urge with a Case Swayback Jack (single blade pocket worn)

Greetings to my healing friend in OZ.

Might as well add to your quandary.

I'm currently very partial to a Queen Serpentine Jack. Mine has Delrin scales, but the Honey Amber Bone would be gorgeous:

Aargh Knarfeng! You touched a raw nerve, that's a knife I've been after for a LONG time but can't find a seller who will ship to the EU without asking a mint in shipping costs. Would be a very nice choice for the OP too.

Taking you on the word. I should have bought a case Small trapper CV and chestnut bone. For me handlematerioal tend to be important and different materials kind of goes with different patterns. A trapper needs bone. That said my favorit pattern is the medium stockman at the moment, cant give you any good reasons since its emotional.

I often not by a new knife I would want to by (nearly allways) but I never by a knife untill I realy know what I want and have considered it for a time.
