Finally bought a Sears 1 hp belt grinder with a 2" x 42" belt section and an 8" disc. It seems to work fine so far (I'll post a pic or two of my lame ass first attempts soon), and will likely remain usefull if i ever grow into a real knife grinder. Now I need a variety of finer belts. I've requested a catalogue from Supergrit, but have had no response so far. Anyone got any other ideas?

Has anyone tried building a bolt on appendage that would hold something like a 6" contact wheel and using 2" x 48" belts on this machine? It seems like there's a greater variety of belts in that size. The Craftsman seems to have a solid motor and chassis. It seems like this would allow some hollow grinding on this machine. Any ideas?

Just buy some sand paper in sheets and cut em to the proper diameter, lot cheaper that way. Use spray on adhesive.

Jmx,
Do a search on ebay for sanding belts and you should find plenty. I buy them from a woman named barbra snyder, or barkat on ebay. They are sold in packs of 10 for $12 in assorted grits. A lot cheaper than the 3 you get for $8 from sears. I have the same grinder and have used it for 3 years. It still works great, and eventhough I have a wilton, I still go back to the sears. I might buy another cause I primeraly use th ewilton for hogging material.

Just my $.02 but I would not by the cheap belts.
SUPERGRIT has 3M ceramic belts for about $2.50 each.
If you have to buy the cheaper belts they have them
for $10.50 0 $12.00 per 10

What every body else said, Jmx, However, if you remove the work rest like I did, I would sugest removeing part of the cast iron houseing. I learned the hard way on mine, was grinding a foulder blade and got my thumb stuck between the lower wheel and belt and houseing. After I got the bleeding and cursing stopped I took a cut off wheel to the offending part. I also have hade to replace the motor, mine burnt up after about a year.

All in all not a bad grinder to start with, I'm still useing mine till I can afford a Coote.

Good luck,

William

I'd love to buy some of their belts but I can't seem to get an email reply nor have I received the catalogue I requested several days ago.

I've also been too busy to call them during normal business hours as this is my after work hobby.
