Need suggestion for a 1 1/2 inch blade folder

I'm looking to buy my father-in-law a pocket knife as a gift, but the company he works for has a policy of 1 1/2 inch blade limit. His dress code requires that he wear a suit and tie, so he doesn't need anything bulky, but I'd like to get him a good everyday at the office type of folder. Any suggestions under $100?

The Kershaw Chive came to mind immediately, but it's almost 2 inches. It looks like a pretty harmless knife, so he may pull it off...unless he flicks it in front of the executive secretary.

A little dressy slip joint would be nice. Maybe a nice pearl? A nice money clip with a little knife and nail file/cleaner?

Spyderco D'Holder Toad. Trust me; it's a gorgeous knife. It photographs very badly, but it really is nice looking.

Browning makes a few nice small folders :) . Also, check out some of the better slip joint folder makers.

Look at the Spyderco Cricket and Mouse. I'm not sure the exact lengths, but they're definitely under 2". A LM Micra would be very useful as well.

How about the SOG Sculptura.m The blade is 2" though.

The Buck 505 has a sub-2" blade, and is a nicely made lockback. This year there are versions available with Malachite or Poly-Pearl scales, which are very attractive.

It looks like a small gentleman's knife, and is about as non-threatening as you can get. All three versions available from www.knifeoutlet.com, for example, for $28-$52, depending on scale material.

1-1/2 inches is a pretty brutal standard. Pen knives and money clip knives are the ONLY things that come to mind. Even the CRKT Delilah's Peck has a 1.63 inch blade! This also rules out a Umfaan or a Kestral.

I don't even own a knife with a blade of less than 1.9 inches.

That's F******* gorgeous! I gotta get one of those!
I thought of the Ken Onion Chive first as well, but it is too long for his requirement. It's a shame too cause that steel handle would look good with a shirt and tie. Benchmade makes a real "handsome" folder called the "Park Avenue" which is very dressy looking, but I fear it's out of the $100 limit. (I almost bought the pre-production model) Boy I'm a big help, aren't I?

Go to the A.G. Russell site and look at the Puma, 4Star

I agree with you totally! He said the company's policy was under 3 inches, but since 9/11/01, they've come down hard. I like the idea of the Spyderco Toad, since he likes one-handers. He doesn't care for plastic handled folders, so it's going to be a tough one.

Cutty, what's the blade length on the Puma?

The Swiss Classic and Mini Champ or Midnite Mini Champ are great small knives. The Mini Champs in particular are nice because they have a spearpoint and wharncliffe blades. If your Dad will risk going near 2", Queen makes some really nice pen knives, and the ATS-34 models can be ordered directly from Queen online. Two nice one handers are the Spyderco Mouse and Spyderco Meercat which has a really cool new lock. I picked one up for $35 from www.gpknives.com this week.

That sculptura is really nice. I may get that instead for my "dress" knife. I guess people frown on camos and a Buck Strider at the opera house.

That Puma is really nice, but I also like the idea of an old-fashioned blade. Does Case make them that small?

I think this thread'll dictate the present for my father as well. But in his case, it's not a office restriction but a wife restriction ;)

Hi El Cid,

Have you considered antique knives? A mint one in that size range would fall into your price range in most cases, and would give you many more option's.:)

I'm with Bob Bowie on an older knife and I know just where I would go to look, Bruce Voyle's website. He has eight pages of knives that are available for sale now, over a dozen small bladed classic pocket knives all in your price range.

I carry any sized knife I feel like, but I sure wouldn't mind carrying this one.

Spyderco Toad or Mouse. How about the Al Mar "SLB" (Stout little blade) or whatever it's called.

The Spyderco Toad is probably your best bet. The blade 1-7/16", so it is honestly under that limit, but it is still a very capable little knife. The frame is satin-finished aluminum; it looks very professional.

I prefer the Spyderco Mouse, but its blade, while under 2", is over the limit. If you decide to push the limit a little, though, go for the Mouse! It can do things you would hesitate to attempt with a heavy-duty 4" tactical.

The Mouse has a similar look to the Toad but it moves you up to a much higher-quality steel (VG-10), a thicker blade, and a better grip.
