Lately I have been carrying a Starmate on days off and until last week a CF Dragonfly at work. Well, it seems my wife has claimed the dragonfly and rather than simply replacing it, I'm thinking about getting something different. I work at a Pharmacy so the knife won't be required to do much tough work (just open boxes, cut tape, etc). Right now I'm leaning heavily in the direction of a Wegner Jr. and was wondering if anybody would have any other suggestions from experience. I am pretty much Spydie loyal so please keep suggestions to within their line. I've heard so many great things about the little Wegner (and I love my large one) that this is probably a rhetorical question anyway, but I would love to see what you fellow Spydernuts have to say.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

PS Does anybody know if there is a date on the small military. This could definitely change my mind.

Well Pillshovel,
How do you feel about the Cricket? I have the Zytel version and out of the 140+ knives I own, this is the one that is used the most. Hands down. I love and carry a variety of the Spydies, but on my job they really frown on >2" bladed knives and the Cricket handles everything I throw at it OTJ. Some weeks I open and inspect the contents of hundreds of boxes and this knife just begs for more. I also highly recommend the sheepsfoot Ladybug. I took this knife and opened a 5' tall box of 1/4" cardboard cutting down the full length of the box. It tackled this task with ease and was still shaving sharp afterward. This little knife cuts like a knife twice it's size. Easily.

Want something a little bigger? The Native in any of it's incarnations. I have the Stainless and the Zytel. Both are top shelf performers. You won't be sorry you got'em.
Hope this helps!

When you said small knife I thought of my Pegasus. Its a great little knife. Plus its engraved. But it sounds like your mind is alreadly made up. The Wegner will be an excellent choice.

Blades

Thanks for the suggestions so far guys. I have a Cricket and a Navigator which is similar to the Pegasus. Both are great knives but, they seem too small for my hand. Some of the models that I have been considering are the Worker, ProVenator, Standard, Calypso Jr, and the Wegner Jr that I had already mentioned. I quess instead of small knife I should have said smaller than the Starmate. Basically, I'm looking for something with under 3 inches of blade and a decent feel to the handle. I don't have too many Spyderco's in that size range. I always seem to buy the very large and the very small.....forgetting the medium.

Thanks again guys and keep the suggestions coming.

For the use you' ve described I would go with a Jess horn LW. It is not as small as the Dragons , Crickets, Pegasiis but slimmer and just as light if not lighter. It has a nice fine clip point for some delicate work if needed and can cut steak (or whatever fancys you) with the best of them. It also has a "gentlemens" folder appearance if a non threatening appearance is a consideration. They are available on the 4 sale forums and dealers forum at good prices. I carry mine frequently in vest/ jacket pocket without the clip. Works for me.

The Wegner Jr is a great little knife. So are the other suggestions. I will suggest that you try to handle a Calypso Jr if you haven't already. I'm willing to bet that might just make up your mind. The Calypso Jr is a great knife for the kind of chores you describe. It is light, has great ergonomics, and the flat ground blade and pointy point make it great for light to medium duty (not that it can't handle a bit more). Though I like the VG-10 steel in the zytel version I would go for the black micarta while they are still available. The nice thing about the black micarta compared to other materials is that it is easy on your slacks, since I doubt you wear jeans or bdu's in a pharmacy. I'm sure you will be happy with whatever you pick so you have a pretty easy decision (or does that just make it harder?).

Good luck,
Paul Davidson

BTW, I looked at your profile and see that you live in KY. I was born and raised in central Kentucky, so I feel obliged to say Howdy! There is a knife show in Covington, KY on Halloween weekend, so you could go handle a bunch of different Spydercos. Off hand I'm not sure where Greensburg is, you would have to tell me what county you're from!

(For those of you that have never been to Kentucky you probably won't get that.)

I'd second the nomination for the Jess Horn Lightweight. It's my favorite of the smaller Spyderco knives.

I go with the Wegner Jr.

Your decision may be based on other factors (already pointed out) such as dress and type of carry. Wegner Jr is a great all-purpose knife, but more than a tad heavier than the CF Dragonfly. Also, maybe consider the effect on your co-workers, of pulling out a 2-3" blade vs the 2" Dragonfly.

The Calypso Jr is like a big Dragonfly, if you liked the design, and the new VG-10 version is significantly lighter than the Wegner Jr.

I'm only speaking of the knives I'm familiar with ... I carry a BM330 (pearl handled Gent) at work to avoid stampeding sheeple.

Take a look at the Calypso Jr. Liteweight. It has excellent blade steel (VG-10) flat ground, and a great Zytel handle. Forgot to mention a clip that can be moved for left of right handed carry.

Best bet-go with an all stainless Delica or Native.

Both are asthetically pretty as well as tough as nails.

Considering you have little need for a huge, extremely rust resistant, stay sharp no matter what knife, either of these in any serrated format should be just fine. What's more-they can be had for around 30-40 bucks online!
