I need suggestions for a new every day carry folder. I already have a bunch of knives but I have very specific needs for this knife.

What I want:

Max of aprox 4 inches (no more than 4.25") closed with a 3+ inch blade
STRONG Pocket clip, preferably tip up carry
Thumb stud, not thumb hole opening
Not a spear point blade, preferably a recurve/drop point or similar
No injection molded handle (read no Zytel)
Must look cool, nice enough to wear with business attire
Lightweight
Frame locks need not apply
Less than $100 (OK, I'll take suggestions of more expensive stuff as well)

For reference, I already own a William Henry T10-CF (probably the coolest knife I own) which meets all these requirements, however, I use a money clip and have found that the knife will occasionally catch on my cash as I remove it from my pocket and thereby slip out of my right front pocket where it's clipped. The knife is so light that if you're in a noisy environment, you don't hear it hit the floor (I've figured out that that's how I lost my first T10-CF, and you know how that hurt). I've also got a Cold Steel Med Voyager Tanto partially serrated which is my everyday carry right now and while it is a very competent knife, it's a bit crude looking to wear with a suit, and frankley, just not cool enough looking. I'm also not in love with the Tanto point as I once was. AlMar makes a knife that hits almost all my points, but doesn't have a pocket clip (very important to me). The top contender I've seen on the web is a Benchmade BM690BC1

Any opinions appreciated

The osborne 940 is too big. At 4.5 inches it starts to look a bit aggressive in a suit. Otherwise it looks like a good knife. Thanks for the suggestion.

How about Pinnacle? I got it much less than 100$ from the WTS forum. :)

How about a Benchmade 705? The Benchmade 850 Gents knife sounds like it would fit your bill. It is a little expensive, maybe one of the 855's might work out better. Happy knife hunting! :D

REKAT Carnivour Cub.
REKAT Pioneer II.

...Either one is what you are looking for.:).

Actually, one of those new CRKT Contrails would be perfect. Or their Viele model.

Glockman (I'm one as well: Old model 21 w/ Trigicons, thanks for the tip on the Rekat Carnivour Cub, it's a little linger than I wanted, but looks like a cool knife. I also fount a deal on a Microtech Mini Socom which comes in right at 4 inches closed, Anyone have any opinions about a comparison between these two knives?

I also found a Gerber SLG 3.25 that fit's the bill for only $60.00! Claims to have ATS34 blade, G10 scales and a liner lock, anyone have any experience with this knife?

To the gentleman who mentioned the BM Pinnacle, it's a frame lock from what I can tell so it's out of the running.

You ought to be able to get the SLG under $50! Check Bayou Lafourche or www.dnrsports.com it is a great knife for the money.

My personal pick would be a talonite EDC from Camillus though. It is a really incredible knife!!!!

this will be at the high end of that price range, but check out the buck strider mini spearpoint. even though it is supposedly a spearpoint, I have found that mine looks more like a drop point. It is really a great little knife. the handle is G-10, and it really grabs ahold of whatever pocket it is in.

I have a Gerber SLG 3.25, and it is one great knife !
Sharp, Easy to take apart completely and reassemble and the deepest-carry-clip possible.
It exists in CF too !

Other suggestions for suit-carry (I have all of them and I think they are OK ; they may be a bit too small ...) :
- Microtech mini socom
- Edge-Tech Mini-impulse
- Camillus EDC 125th anniversary
- Spyderco Peter Herbst
- Boker 2082
- CRKT S2

Might I suggest a plain edge Emerson Mach-1? One heck of a knife, nice curves too. The handle feels really good in the hand, too. In a satin finish[read hard chrome] blade, they look rather non-threatening, too.

If you want something that looks good with a suit and does not offend go with the BM 690BC1. Beautiful knife, great size, good lock up. This knife is a joy to admire and use. It may be a tad more than you want to spend, but if you decide on one e-mail me I may be able to show you where to get one at a pretty good price.

BTW... If you go for a 940, I have a LNIB blue KOTM I will sell you at a great price. It really looks smaller than it is, very thin and unobtrusive.

AS I understand it, the Mini Socom is right about 4" which is about the most I can carry in a suit and not look overly aggressive (4.5" maybe but definately no more). You mention the SLG 3.25 which was on my list, but I'm trying to stay American made. You like your SLG 3.25 more than your Mini Socom? Why?

I'm really interested in your opinion. I want something useful, but smaller than a traditional "Tactical Knife". I think something in this size range can be very tactical if it's in your pocket, because of it's size, not your briefcase.

What about the other stuff you mentioned? Does the Boker have a thumb stud and pocket clip? Do they all meet the spec I set at the beginning of this thread?

Have a look at the Kershaw "Double Cross" Mod.#4380. It is a new pocket knife that was designed
by Kershaw for use in a business environment. It doesn't have a pocket clip but it is a one hand liner
lock two blade wonder that will cover 99% of everything you'll need daily. It also has the gee whiz
cool factor because no one else makes anything like it now. I've got one and it's a neat little knife.

Hi JMXCPTER (pfew, difficult name)
here goes : Mini Socom <=> SLG 3.25

The points ( ;) ) that promote the SLG to daily carry are :
. its slender shape ; it fits in the small ballpoint-pen-pocket (cannot give any other name) on the inside of my suits <=> MS is rather wide for its size (so it should be stronger ...)
. its very-very-very (did I mention very) deep pocket clip <=> MS sticks out quite a bit (whatever you prefer)
. G10 handle (I like G10) <=> aluminium with (kraton ?) inserts
. finish very good <=> MS even better

Other knives : I selected what I consider my suit-knives, and did not "really" take your desires into account. I am more of tip-down (knife-speaking ;) ) guy, so most are tip down.
The S2 and EDC are frame lock
The Spydie has a hole
The Edge-Tech has 3 parallellogram (same in English ?) holes
Leaves the Boker : tip down ; oval thumb stud ; modern stylish look (my opinion) ; pocket clip (99% of my knives have pocket clips)

Other suggestions (looking at my knives and your desires) :
. Beretta Avenger : very cooooool ; very stylish ; tip up or down
. Benchmade mini stryker
. CRKT Apache 2 ; not realy stylish
. Benchmade 350 : a bit cheap-looking

My suggestion :
. for coolness : go Beretta Avenger
. classy style : SLG
. modern looks : boker 2082
. mini stryker : for the well-dressed-military-look
. fit-and-finish : mini socom

by the way, if you want anything smaller : go Spyderco Mouse or Navigator ... with holes or an Kershaw Chive ... to play with

I finally got out to a store that had most of my candidates (all but the BM690BC1) and here are my impressions:

REKAT Carnivour Cub - built like a tank; very strong but very crude and much bulkier than I thought it would be. I did really like the knife's ergonomics, but it's just too bulky for EDC in business attire IMHO. No longer up for consideration.

Benchmade 705 - Loved the opening but found excessive lateral play in the pivot on several samples (not sure if this can be fixed by tightening up the pivot but it was uninspiring), also I'm reluctant to bet my safety on those flimsy looking little springs in the Axis lock (which is almost as smooth as my William Henry!)- no longer up for consideration.

Benchmade 940 - Love the form factor, tip up carry, great clip placement, hate the blade design (might be useful, but it's plug ugly) and again there's the Axis lock springs- this one's out too.

Gerber SL 3.25- I was surprised by this little sweetie. Great form factor, nice fit and finish, I might have to buy one of these just because of the high cool to price ratio. It reminded me a lot of my William Henry Carbon Lancet, only a bit larger but of course not executed nearly as well, although better than I thought you could do for a $60.00 knife with Carbon Fiber scales. The liner lock did seem a little light weight though. This might become a staple gift knife for me along with the Leatherman Micra (non knifies love that little thing!). Only real drawback is the Made in Taiwan thing and a somewhat afterthought style clip.

Microtech Mini SOCOM- The winner for now, perfect size, incredible fit and finish, beautiful blade shape. Not a full blown Tac knife, but seemingly serviceable. Only drawbacks are tip down carry and it rides a bit high in pocket (making it more visible, but easier to get out). Ordered black plain blade one from 888knivesrus for only $95.00 including shipping! The retailer I went to wanted $180.00 plus tax!

Mini Sebenza - my future EDC. Now I understand all the Sebenza hubbub. This knife doesn't seem to have an equal. Incredibly solid, comfortable, beautiful fit and finish, excellent clip design, it's got it all. Now I just need my wife to get back to work so I can buy one. I'm actually inspired to sell a few old ones to raise a bit of capitol to help pay for it.

Thanks for all the info guys (and girls if there are any out there).
