I'm in the market for a new hunting knife. Mainly for whitetail, but the occassional coyote and fox as well. I've been using an Old Timer, but it never seems to get quite as sharp as I'd like (I'm using a sharpmaker, so there's no excuse).

I'd like to stay in the 3.5 to 4.5 inch blade range, fixed blade of course. I'm really fond of aus 8, because it's so easy to sharpen, but I'm open to suggestions. I don't need a super heavy blade, I use a small hatchet to get through the pelvic bone and I also have a small gerber zipper hook, so I'm mainly concerned with just having a good overall knife for the rest.

Whatdya think?:D

Bark River Knife Company has several that will work

They are a well known company among experienced hunters and fixed blade knife nuts. They make the sharpest fixed blade I have ever seen. They are one of the few who hand grinds a convex edge.

I second DGG, bark river makes very fine knives, nice to look at and even nicer to use. I like the balance on some of thier small hunters. The cold steel is also a good choice if your not lookin to spend as much. What is your price range by the way??

Third nomination for Bark river, if you want a custom check out Gene Ingram.

Custom Wayne Hendrix knife. Trained by George Herron and he works as a Hunting Guide. The knife I have from him is nice to look at yet does a great job as a hunting knife. Had 2 knives by him but a good friend talked me out of 1.

You want a really sharp knife and you want to be able to handle foxes to whitetail in size. I suggest you get one of the AG Russell Deer Hunter model knives. The blades are really thin and easy to sharpen. You can choose between AUS-8, VG10, or D2 alloy blades. Due to the thin profile these are all pretty easy to sharpen. I would suggest VG10 as an upgrade to AUS-8 that will get just as sharp and will hold an edge longer:

I most highly suggest you pick up the Busse Pork Belly Skinner seen here:

I have no idea how well the darn thing works, I just want someone else to try one before I spend any money on it!:D

On a more level note I've gotten by for a few years with a Bark River Highlander I picked up at a good deal for $35. couldn't ask for anything more than it's delived ten fold from a hunting knife.

My Father's a huge fan of his Spyderco Moran also, but bear in mind they don't come with a convex edge anymore:grumpy: Not that it's hard to put one on yerself, but it was nice.

Both of these knives will go through a couple of caribou without even coming close to needing a touch up.

For the money you can't beat a Buck Vanguard. I have used one for years on whitetail and black bear. I chose the wood handle without zipper.

The Bark River Upland Special is a great hunting knife. Super fit and finish and a 4" blade of A-2 Steel. You can't beat BRKT customer service. (79.95 @ knifeworks.com)

Another knife MAKER I just thought of. Depending on how much you want to spend.... you can't beat a Bob Dozier knife!!!! I own the k2 general pattern. I'll tell ya, the heat treat that is put on His d2 blades is second to NONE! Very pratical designs, and reasonable for "hand made" knives. Here is a link to a site where you can order one immediately. I think Bob's waiting list is about 10-12 months out.

Wow. Lots of good replies here.

I'd go over $100 or so for something that really catches my eye. But I don't judge a knife by it's pricetag. I'll start sorting through some of these recommendations. I'll probably end up with a couple;)

Bill Moran Featherweight

I bought one last year after the season finished and can't wait to skin with it this year. It looks like almost the perfect deer/hog skinner to me, but I have yet to field test it.

Northwoods Willow Leaf: D2, 4" blade, various handle materials, versatile and very sharp.

I think I'm seeing a theme. BARK RIVER?!?!

They look like a very functional quality blade. Anyone know where I could get a kydex sheath? Or how sturdy are the leather ones they come with?

thanks again.....

New leather sheaths comming with BRKT knives in last few months are way better than previos ones, made from top quality vegetable tanned leather.

And Sagecreek is source for kydex sheaths for most BRKT knives..
