Need suggestions for a smaller folder...

Hey guys, I'm looking for suggestions on a smaller folder to carry at work. It needs to have a blade length of less than 3". I'd like it to be tough enough and have good enough blade steel to be used every day and not have to be sharpened TOO often. Also, lots of smaller knives have handles that are WAY too small for me, so I'd like to get something with a bigger handle.

Anybody got any suggestions? TIA.

How about a Spyderco Calypso jr.? It has a good sized handle for a smaller blade.

Try and CRKT Urban Shark. It's a sturdy little knife and most non-knife people have thought it was "nice" when they borrowed it. Mine has served me well for almost a year now. Or get a Victorionox Recruit with Alox handles. Friendly looking.

Good luck.

Big Handles?

Try the Spyderco Salsa (especially the Ti version).

Big, stout handle
Compression Lock
Cobra Hood
Full flat grind

Darrel Ralph designed Apogee folder, or the EDC. In addition, a small Sebenza, if ye can afford it.

I would first suggest the CRK Small Sebenza in that it fits all of your criteria. If that's out of your range, check out some of the smaller Emerson knives like the Mini CQC7A. And even though it's alittle bit over 3" the Mini Comm is one heck of a work horse.
Thanks,
Matt

Spydercos make GREAT working knives. After much usage, I gave my Calypso to a friend who owns a carpentry shop and it has been through the ringer and still kicks butt and takes names. Even after he tried to cut some metal banding and jagged the snot out of the blade. He thought it was plastic.

It'll be cutting plastic straps that bind stacks of printing plates together, cutting open packages of all varieties (some of the packages contain pretty caustic materials, so a stainless blade would be great), slicing the ends off of thin mylar sheets, cutting cardboard and paper, and sometimes even cutting whatever I eat for lunch. I also sometimes use the end of the handle to smooth the edges of aluminum plates, so it would help if the end is round, but if not I can work around it.

I took a look at a Salsa the other day and the handle was nice, but I'd like it a little bigger. I'm afraid a small sebenza is a little out of my price range at least for a while... The crkt would be great but I'd be sharpening that sucker every day I bet. I have never seen a Calypso jr. in person but from looking at a few pics, it looks like it could work.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys!

Well, it was not designed for it, but it sounds like it would work if you are willing to pring for it. The Gunting. It has full sized handles. Strongest folder Spyderco makes The butt of the handle is rounded. 440V holds an edge well. Price might be a little more than others, but you get a lot for your money. The blade shape is very useful as well. Good luck.

Being the SpyderKnut that I am, I suggest any one of these Spyderco knives:

Calypso Jr.,
Native,
Delica

I'm sure that any one of these could fill your needs to the "T". ;) All have a 3" blade or less and FRN handles for a superb grip. For more info, check them out at www.spyderco.com

Just my .02 :D

Good Luck

Every post here should be ignored but this one (unless they agree ;-).

Get a BM 705. If in doubt, so a little search on this knife.

I'd check out the Camillus EDC, it's great knife in a small package. It is fairly easy to open. I normally find small knives hard to open one handed but the EDC works great. Fairly reasonable price and great steel.

since you'll be cutting plastic i suggest something thats fully serrated since a plain edge might not be able to grip onto the plastic as well

Ok, this is probably the most boring suggestion you'll hear but based on the use you plan to put it to I think I'd just spring for a snap-off blade box cutter for about 90% of the jobs you mentioned.
