I own several folders but I think I am needing a fixed blade....I like to have a fire pit going out in the backyard and I usually buy 1/2 cord of wood for it, and I have a fiskars axe for splitting wood, however, it seems like I need a knife to kind of shave wood off of the logs to make up some kindling...what is good and cheap (i.e. in the $25 range)

thanks

ditto the mora...i've handled a lot of "bushcraft" knives and the ones that have better ergonomics and performance were easily 20x the price of a mora! can't beat that.

I have tried out several of the Moras for making kindling (light batoning) and shavings and they all have worked well. These include #1, 612, 2/0, 511, 546, and 911. Out of those the 612 and the 911 were the easiest for me to use. I put a secondary micro bevel on both of them to strengthen the edge a little.
