You are covering a lot of ground. Most people will ask "what do you want to do with it." I will suggest one of the many many choices by recommending the Benchmade 750. Titanium scales, slightly under 4" blade, strong lock, utility blade, good steel, easy to clean, flat grind.

A knife is by default a tool, it's only a weapon when a human chooses to make it so.

Well with those broad specs you gave, the best flat ground production knife I would have to say is the Spyderco Military with the CPM-440V blade.

Retails for around $150.00 and you could find it for less if you check around!

Yup, flat grind = Spyderco Military.

The REKAT Sifu production models are also flat-grind

. As a fighting non-auto folder it currently has no rivals, period. Other pieces work well but the Sifu is king of the hill. Blade length is 5.45", steel is ATS34.

For heavy utility, several 4" folders have better steel, the Spydie Military being an excellent example. An M2 tool steel Benchmade AFCK is another good choice.

If I needed a workhorse-edgeholding utility knife in addition to a fighter, I'd still pack the Sifu for "social occasions" and get a Boye 3" Dendritic Zytel folder for 90% or more of my utility needs. These aren't very expensive, and their edgeholding and "slicing performance" are reputed to be outstanding. The blade length is such that it won't freak out too many people if you're dealing with an office/warehouse/work environment. They won't ever see the Sifu while it's concealed

, it comes out to play only when absolutely necessary.

The Sifu/Boye combo would be *very* hard to beat, and would still be in the $175 range total. In other words, maybe "one do-it-all knife" isn't the right path...

Well, since you put emphasis on the word FLAT, I assume you mean fully flat ground from the spine to edge... in that case I'd probably go with the Spyderco Calypso or maybe the Military. Come to think of it, I can't think of any other production knives with full flat grinds with blades over 3 inches...

Full size Spyderco Calypso is just the ticket. VG 10 is great steel

Sounds like the Spyderco Military to me. One awesome knife for sure. Great design, great steel (440-V), now to decide on plain or serrated.

Now, nothing against Spyderco, but Benchmade makes the Mel Pardue 3000 auto which has a blade of nearly 4 inches. It is flat ground and has a button lock. Nice, long, straight blade of ATS-34. As far as handle material, it's aluminum with rubber inserts. I know, not quite what you're looking for, but fast one hand opening for sure.
