Need Suggestions for My First Emerson

I've recently become interested in Emerson Knives, specifically the waved: CQC7a, CQC7b, Commander and Mini Commander.

Initially I wanted a blade length 3 inches or less so I could carry it in California without worrying too much. So I was drawn to the Mini CQC7 and Mini Commander line. But only the Mini Commander comes with the wave.

Basically Im looking for advice on which model and configuration? Hard chrome? Black Ti? Full sized or mini?

What about Emerson quality control, and the durability of the Black blade coatings? (my brand new La Griffe's coating started rubbing off in about 2 days after I got it :()

I'd like to hear some suggestions from Emerson owners out there. What they like, what they don't.

Thanks for stopping by.

Given the choises you outlined, I prefer the full sized Commander with Satin "Hard Chromed" finish.

The Black-T is a Telfon finish applied to the blade and will scratch and scrap off with use. It happens.

Even when the Teflon is completely stripped off, it impregnates the metal of the blade, providing protection. One owner I know buys Black-T models and immediatly strips the Teflon off, leaving a Grey . . Satiny looking bare metal look. Even in Florida it doesn't even get surface oxidation.

They Hard Chrome "Satin" is a very rugged finish and you'll play Hell trying to scrap that off.

Since I love the COMMANDER more than any other knife. That would be my suggestion.

As would be mine. Commanders are of a very sound design, and come in 3 sizes and many combinations.

John Hollister,
Even though it penetrates below the surface of the metal, having the black-T coating rub off just doesn't sound too appealing. Sounds like Hard Chrome is the way to go.

Echoscout, Kwaiken56,
I have a auto MT Amphibian it has a similar blade profile to the Commander. I really like the blade on the Amphibian but wish I had the manual version. Maybe the Commander is just right for what I'm looking for. I know the Commander comes in a mini size and the regular size, whats the 3rd size it comes in?

I glanced at the Satin Commanders on Tadgear.com before reading your post, I didn't realize that the Satin Commanders were a little longer than the ESM's.

I've narrowed it down to a waved Mini Commander or a waved CQC7B...

Really want one with a wave, condsidering the mini Commander because I need a blade I can carry around, and not scare everyone away; considering the waved CQC7 because I like the Emerson tanto design, and because they don't sell a waved mini CQC7.

Anyone wanna trade?

You're right. I never before realized it, but the Super Commanders are indeed just a bit longer than the ES1M, but not by much. 1/16 to 1/32 of an inch perhaps. I stood 2 of my 4 Super commanders up to my ES1M for verification.

If you don't want to startle anyone, I'd go with the Mini C, or the CQC-7 A. That tanto profile freaks non-knife people out sometimes. ;)

Based on my limited experience I would say that knife laws in California are selectively enforced. I was showing a police officer my Benchmade 940, and asked about its legality. You always see people who know a little about knife laws holding the blade perpendicularly to their open palms to check the length. He basically told me as long as I'm not doing anything illegal with it, I shouldn't worry about it.

What I got from that was, don't get do anything illegal, i.e. if your doing something you shouldn't make sure you don't have a qusetionable knife on you.

Scott Dog:

The only reason Im concerned with length is my ability to carry it legally, (I think the blade length limit is 3-3.25 or under for California) and so when I do pull it out to cut something, someone's not gonna get freaked out and call the police. Just don't wanna get hassled by the man. :)

I've read the California penal code regarding folders. In California, a folding knife is not considered illegal unless it has a blade sharpened on both edges (a dagger), is a balisong knife or a spring assisted switchblade. You can legally carry a ten inch folding blade and have it concealed. The only exceptions that I have found are in federal buildings and on airplanes. Laws vary by city but that is the general rule. Do a search and I will think you find that I am right. For my purposes a 3 inch folder does everything I need and is not difficult to carry.

Your probably right, I can just imagine the looks on people faces if I pulled out a 10" folder to open an evelope :D

Yah 3-4 inches is good for me too. I just don't want to go through the hassle of explaining a large folder.

Still can't do a search by the way, basic member status.

Thanks for the info.
