Hi folks,

I need your suggestions for a new knife. I need something unobtrusive and gentleman-like to take to an office job. It would be used to open packages, cut the occasional loose thread, open mail, etc. Here are the specs I'm looking for.

Blade Length: Ideally 2.5-3.0 inches. Definitely no longer than 3.0 inches.
Blade Steel: Not really that critical, considering the planned uses.
Scales: I prefer natural materials such as wood, ivory,or something like carbon fiber is OK too. No G10. Think classy.
Weight: The lighter the better. This knife will be clipped to dress slacks. 2.5oz and under is probably a rough guide.
Locking Mechanism: Not a strong preference on this.
Pocket clip: MUST have a pocket clip.
Tip up or tip down: I prefer tip down, but tip up is OK
Assisted Opening: Just say no.
Opening Mechanism: Thumb stud, oval hole, whatever...
Price: Under $1,300
Custom vs. Production: I actually prefer a high-end production knife. I don't have to use my whole budget.
:)

Before you suggest it, I've had multiple Mnandis, WH, and similar knives. They're very nice, but I want to see what other options are out there. However, if those knives came to your mind, you're on the right track.
Thanks for your input.

Check out the folding knives in the knife makers exchange. There are some really nice original one offs.

MarkJ, you are a true Bastid at heart. Not many of us who joined BFC around Y2K are still looking for that EDC for over $1K.

But I'll bite.... I had a Spyderco baby Jess Horn once. It had white micarta, which I was going to have scrimmed at some point. I sold it to PhilL for some reason, and one day I will fly out to NYC and I will stand outside his apartment and sing off key until he throws that knife out the window at me.

However, I recommend you get an actual Jess Horn gents knife AND the aforementioned Spyderco Jess Horn. When you see how the Spydie pales in comparison to the real JH, you'll send me the Spydie in appreciation for steering you so true, just to get that junky POS away from your new blushing beauty of an EDC.

And BTW, you have officially taken the lead in the "what knife do I buy for $XXX" craze here in General. I wondered who would be the first goof-ball to hit the 4 figure "Unicorn Mark" for a recommendation, and you are well past that, Bruddah !

Thanks for the reply; I'll take a look at the Jess Horn(s). What can I say, buying fewer but more expensive knifes + new job = disposable income for a change. Nevertheless, I'm not sure if being the founding member of the "Unicorn Club" is a desirable thing. LOL

I was going to go simple, and suggest the Spyderco Sage 2, until I saw your price point.
Check out the William Henry B05 Monarch line.

Fallkniven folders, Al Mar nomad, hawk & Piranhas smaller autos are very lite.

I would give the Spyderco Chaparral a look. 3 different variations: 1. Carbon fiber 2. Machined titanium 3. 3-D machined titanium. I carry a Chap 2 for my dress knife. It's light, thin blade with great steel would be perfect for your listed purposes, classic lockback design, excellent fit and finish, and well under your budget.

Tough one, Mark.

If I had a knife budget of $1300, I'd probably be looking at a Rockstead, but I don't think they make anything similar to what you're interested in. Your price-range is right around the sweet spot for several William Henry options (which was my first knee-jerk response--lol) but you're looking for something different.

Maybe a Klötzli Gent's Folder from AG Russell? 2.5" ATS-34 blade, titanium handle with either stag or carbon fiber inlay, 1.8oz, removable pocket clip. Under $500.

Good luck in your search! I'd be interested to hear what you finally decide on!:)

I would agree with Colorado and go custom. At the same time, start a fund for your $1,999 knife.

William Henry was my first thought, as well, but I'm not sure if the usually make them with clips - at least on the ones I have seen, the clip was on the sheath of the folder. Rockstead's Hizen model is 3 inches (though I have been told that duralumin shows wear pretty quickly).

For your budget you can easily go to Henryland.

Between WH, Reeve, A.G. Russell and one or two others you should be able to zero in on something in a very short amount of time. It's the opposite of the problem the guy with the $50 budget has.....

Klötzli and Rockstead were the names that came to mind first for me as well. I don't own either so I'll say no more. Happy hunting and do post some pics of what you end up with.

Just out of curiosity, Mark, I went over to Arizona Custom Knives website and typed your criteria into the "Find Your Knife" search tool.

I just have one more question after that... why you and not me. Dang the luck.

Four pages of selections so far, and if you add Tip-Up carry, you'd probably get 4 more pages. Awesome. Enjoy the search, old boy.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Lots o' knives to check out.
