My SAR team is having a little Survival outing, where we're going to combine some basic survival skills with a little SAR thinking and let everybody learn by having a good time. So far, here's the stuff I've come up with -

1. Pick the item list. You guys know what I'm talking about, where you're stranded on a desert item and you have to pick off a list the things you'd want to take with you. Really more of a thinking game, just to earn some points.

2. Make a fishing pole and catch a fish. They'll be given the basics but they'll have to improvise on how to make the pole, and then catching a fish is it's own battle.

3. Trivia, I think we're using the cards from the "Worst Case Scenerio" game. More thinking, gotta balance it out a little for the non-athletic.

4. Walking the line - you have to move your group across a line without dropping anyone.

5. A maze, where you must not only find your way through but search for clues along the way. The clues will be playing cards, and the group must memorize the cards they find.

6. Pack check, we issue a basic pack and we'd just like to see how many people actually bring theirs with them. Plus, we'll be able to see who's thought of other pieces of gear to toss in there.

7. Distance estimation, there will be two flags at a set distance and the groups will have to estimate the distance from one to the other.

That's what I've got so far. I've got to keep it sorta simple, as while the majority of the team can work outdoors there are a few that don't have that skill set, and there'll also be spouses and children about. Fire is out due to local regulations, but I'm open to just about any other suggestion. TIA.

Shelter building may be nice if you can get away without destroying too much (Trees, brances, grass)

Wounded teammate E&E.
I did this in the British Army whilst on an Adventure training week. Make an area that is a 'river' The situ is that you need to get an incapacitated team mate over the river for a med evac (was hostile forces in our case). There will be poles, ropes and some 50 gal tanks for floatation. If there is no way to have a water obstacle then you can make them rig some kind of stucture to get the team mate either over a ledge or onto it. Either way they need to design and build a structure. No nails, only ropes are provided so this gives a good chance to learn knots too.

Bow and arrow? Dutch arrow ( Between an arrow and spear in size, it is accelerated with a string, using a 'sling shot' action. Easy to build and fun to use. you could set up some mock prey (3D Archery target? Maybe a local archery place would lend you one for a few bucks)

Treasure hunt using map and compass. As they find each clue it either spells out a word or perhaps a mobile phone # where they get more clues or a prize. You should make it so that there are 2 ways to get to the end so as not to lose enthusiasm.

Making maps from memory, take them through and area then get them to make maps and judge distances. After they are done take out the real map and a rule and see who was closest.

Just a few ideas whilst bored at work :)

Other uses for fishing equipment, ie; traps, snares, snagging birds, sewing, etc.

Direction finding without compass

Tracking using several different signs of direction taken by lost/injured individual/s from obvious to subtle including tracks, drops of blood, broken twigs and branches, etc.

Constructing primitive tools like knives, fire making tools, digging sticks/spears, cordage, etc.

Foraging/scrounging competition. See who comes up with the most useful item in a survival situation.

Envious of what?? Didja wanna come and play? ;)

Longbow50, those are some good ideas, too. .I'll work in what I can. .

this is a fun game. If your out with a campfire at night with a bunch of people.

Wait till the fire dies down some...

2 "spotters" will be at the camp fire with flashlights. These flash lights can only be turned on when you spot someone so the "sneaker" knows he is talking about someone in his location.

The object is to see how close to the campfire you can get without your name being called. If the "spotter" hits say a tree you are hiding behind and calls out the wrong name of the person "sneaking" that person stays put untill theres a way out of his hiding spot(when there looking for other people).

We did this in scouts and it was alot of fun for us kids.

We could camo up and get pretty close going slow and low :D

Sure would. Give you guys all a laugh as I try to do everything weakhanded.

Broke my wrist (scaphoid). Evaluation today for more cast time or not.

Have fun guys.

Maybe one of your next trips.
