I was wondering if you kukri vets can give a newbie some advice on buying his first kukri? I have big hands (2xl gloves almost to small) and I have a pretty long reach. The one I was looking at was the MK 43. Primary use is utility/self defense on my semi truck. Thanks in advance.

I was also wondering about blade length in relation to arm reach? I will admit that I am a complete and total untrained individual other than the little bit of training I got when I was a Corpsman with the Marines back in the day. Again, any and all advice would be greatfully appreciated.

Can you tell us a little more about what kind of use you anticipate for the khukuri? Any good-sized khukuri will work for occasional self-defense, but for most people the regular usage should dictate the type and size of blade.

The best size and weight depends on how strong and fit you are. With your large hands you almost have to go for one of the bigger models, since the smaller models usually have smaller and narrower handles that wouldn't work for you.

The M43 would be a good choice because they usually come with a fairly large handle. Same for the WW II model. Both of them can do heavy chopping as well as lighter tasks, and are also good self-defense blades. If your arm and wrist strength are in proportion to your hand size, an 18-20" M43 or WW II model is a good choice.

Be aware that in HI parlance, length means overall length, not blade length. For knives of this size, weight is probably a bigger issue than blade length. Swinging a big, heavy khukuri is a serious business: you can get tired fast, and if you swing and miss you better be sure that your own body isn't in the path of the swing. As far as self-defense is concerned, an attacker isn't going to care if you lop off his arm with an 18" khukuri or a 20" khukuri. Even the smaller ones will do that job with no trouble at all.

If you've been looking through the HI web site, you should know that it does not display all the sizes and models that are available. Many more options come up at DOTDs (deal of the day) on this forum. Your best bet is to send Yangdu an email telling her about your large hands and how you expect to use the khukuri. She can give you good advice and of course she knows exactly what is available at any given time. The lengths, weights and handle sizes are somewhat standardized, but not entirely, since these are hand-made knives made with traditional tools and materials.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out.

I think you'll be happy with any of the heavier blades 18" and up. A 20" ang khola is a real beast.

If you've got big mitts, the 18" WWII has a lot of handle length, but maybe not enough girth to be hand filling.

A lot of times there is a lot of variation between models. My m43 has a very medium handle. Not a lot of ways to choke up or down on it. Granted, this one is like 10 years old. I don't have overly large hands but the grip is close to being on the small side.

When in doubt, email yangdu:)
She'll set ya up with what ya need:)

We know that there aren't any M43's currently available. Probably sometime next year. Another fella checked just yesterday or today.

Not sure on the other models. I'm a relative newby myself but I concur with all above.

I have a 20" AK and it's a beast but the handle is large and I'm sure you'd have no problem with it.
I just received a Foxy Folly today and the handle on it is massive. I have small hands and I can handle it but it's got plenty of length and girth, probably fit you better than I but I'm not giving it up.
I'll post some pictures after a bit.

My first Khuk was the WWII in 18". I also have big hands, oddly shaped though. Big palm short fingers. The WWII handle is fine and 18" is long enough but real convenient.

As Bawanna says, and also in my experience, the Foxy Folly has a big handle too, and I love the fullers. The WWII is more of a workhorse but light enough.

Generally speaking, the handles get bigger and thicker with the longer khukris. I have a 30" sirupati and the handle is very thick and almost big enough for two hands.

With 30" I'd probably need both hands. I have a 25" and it's surprisingly handy. Maybe I do need a 30 afterall?

Maybe I better take it to the next level and get a 40". I know ndoghouse is wanting a 30 or maybe 35 and I don't want to be out done ya know?

Get an HI Katana. They don't come around often but a lot more often than a 40" khukuri. Maybe you could do a holster for it in the chair. That would look great.

Im having to tone it down now until I get a new job so the 30 CAK will have to wait! Bummer! Do love my 25" Siru! Very fine tool!

Yup on all counts. First thing I've ever won in my whole life despite all the raffles and contest I have entered.
I felt kind of badly since I was a brand new HI forumite at the time. Several folks bought several tickets. I had to scrape to get the one and entertained no thought of actually winning but felt really good cause I thought it was for once a good cause.
When Karda announced that I was the winner, I nearly fell out of my chair, and falling out of my chair is not a good thing.

I've entertained thoughts of putting it back up on a lottery or auction or whatever and letting auntie put the money to good use but everytime I look at it or especially pick it up and hold it, that thought rapidly diminishes. If they are ever in a jam (more than usual) it's there for that purpose.

It's really a proverbial thing of beauty. Words can't describe it.
