Hi All, i need some feedback for what would be the most appropriate sheath for a nmfbm. intended use is hard use, bush-craft. Personally i don't like leather sheaths. design, material, and positioning (horizontal/vertical/with leg strap/chest/shoulder/etc etc). lastly, where may i order said sheath. many thanks

If you don't like leather then try KYDEX. There are many benders in the pages of these sub forums. I have had great experience with MASHED CAT OUTFITTERS (Eric), Steelnut (Scott) and Buy Brown Industries (Dave Brown) here on the forum. They do a great job and are quick about getting your order done. You might need to send your knife to him to have it fitted up but hey it's worth every penny. That is just MHO!!!

You would probably get more response if you showed a picture of the knife you have in mind. There are hundreds of custom knifemakers and production facilities that make knives---and give them names or numbers. nmfbm is absolutely meaningless to most of us sheath makers. You might as well have specified a knife such as a abcde. Get the picture? Few sheath makers would care to respond to your request. The fact that you do not like leather would automatically eliminate most of us. Your specifications for your desired sheath of a multi-carry design, leg straps and shoulder, chest, leg strap--etc etc sounds as a great challenge. You have already eliminated the leather craftsman so good luck with all the straps and harness. Are you sure that you would not rather have two or more sheaths to meet all your requirements?--------Sandy

Thanx to russ for the answer, i will look into them asap. And my apologies to helmar4578 for not being more specific with the details of the blade itself.

here is a link with pictures and dimensions: http://www.gearcult.com/knives/busse-combat-nmfbm-announced/

With respect to leather, I simply am uneducated with its merits as a sheath in bush craft / hard use scenarios. As far as I understand with leather (WHICH IS NOT MUCH), one should not get leather wet, it is easy to scratch, and in all likelihood, would be something that the blade could cut through. I am fully aware that I very well may be wrong on all counts.

In response to the specifics of the sheath, I was once again presumptuous and failed to be specific. I was asking for advice on what would be the best positioning for a chopper, where and how would be the most efficient and effective place to carry a 17.5" long blade? I know from my personal experience that I like having it hanging vertical at an angle from the waist, like a sword. But I also know that this setup has its drawbacks, like the handle jabbing into my gut when in prone or crouched position. I am simply looking for advice.

I would suggest a simple Baldric to attach to your sheath, be it leather or plastic.
There are a couple ways to attach your sheath to it...in the pictures is one I made for myself to carry around a rather heavy pistol I didn't want to wear on my belt, while walking through the woods. I made a hanger out of Micarta to attach to the Baldric, and it could also be used on anything else I wanted to haul around, like a big badass blade like yours.
The strap just hangs over the opposite shoulder from holster/sheath. I will be adding a strap to wrap around my waist and attach to the snaps to steady the piece at my side.
A leather leg strap will also help.
Feel free to contact me if you like this idea.

^ very interesting, this will need more thought. how would the strap around the torso move with the body, say if I were to bend down, im thinking it would slacken up and that could get snagged on something. what do you think?

Such a strap would be rather slack around your body, it's meant to keep the piece from swinging away from you. It would not be tight at all, however there will be plenty of adjusting room so that you could wear it as tightly or as slacky as you wish....or not use it at all, as there would just be D rings at the ends to attach to the snaps you see in the pix.
Such a strap could also be made of elastic material, like suspenders have.
I understand the more straps on your body when maneuvering through the bush, the more chances of getting snagged up on something.......

how do people get their blades back in the sheath if the sheath is in their back? I can't imagine it is easy? but thus far it seems to be the most effective location. thoughts?
