I havent seen the movie in several years, but I got to thinking about it today and do not even know the name. Its a story that takes place in the early sixties (a guess). Cold war era students are at school when the air raid warning sirens go off. Everyone is sent home and the movie kind of follows the different students on the way. One goes home to her family bomb shelter, another climbs inside a fridge, and at the very end some kid is trying to dig a hole in the dirt and...

BOOM!!!

Any ideas? I have no idea when the movie was made, what the title is, and who is in it...
Thanks,
Mo

That could be it, as the story did take place in a small town/rural area. I will do a little bit more looking around about The Day After to see if that is indeed it.
Thanks,
Mo

The Day After was shown in schools all across the country in the mid-Eighties. I saw it at my school and it did not have a good effect on me. At least with Red Dawn, there was some humor involved. This one was definitely dooms-day from the get-go.

Years later, I consented to seeing Dr. Strangelove.....brought back the memories/bad dreams/etc.....but being a bit older helps. I think, even as a teenager, you have a hard time completely distilling truth from fiction.

You may also want to add On The Beach (Gregory Peck, Fred Astare, Eva Gardner) to your list. It is probably one of the better done, and most highly regarded, of nuclear doomsday movies.

When I was in school, they made us watch an anti-hunting brainwashing film called "Say Goodbye". It was chock full of scenes of hunters shooting prairie dogs to pieces, and guys clubbing baby seals. Then, a few years later we got "Wheels of Agony" and "Red Asphalt" in Driver's Ed. Ah, the gory 70s. No wonder Friday the 13th and Halloween were such big hits.

Notice how soon after "The Day After" the Cold War ended and the Fatwah started? I didn't sleep right for days after that movie. I believe it took place in Charleston, SC.

There was an English version/style of the movie "The Day After" that was released shortly after - I think it was called "Threads".
IMHO it was a better flic.

After looking around, Im not sure it is "The Day After". IIRC, it was made before the 80s. Thanks.
